in my city, a teacher showed the movie Rosewood, to high school sophmores and got fired. screwed up, huh?

What Alabamain city is this? :-)

reply

what, where the movie was shown, or where it takes place? If the latter, it takes place in either New Orleans or Baton Rouge , Losisiana.

I think s/he meant your city...

I guess it just depends on the parents, I mean they have a right to do what they see fit but I personally don't get why it would be a big deal. But my parents were never really very strict on what I watched, they knew I was mature enough to watch most films. I was 9 years old when this film was first released to video and that was the first time I had seen it.

reply

I don't see the big deal. I was at least nine or ten when I first viewed this film. Other than being a tad scared of Elzora (i. e. scene of her cackling while Eve runs to find her father), I was cool.

Honestly, it's a great subject for discussion, dealing with perception and inappropriate filial relationships, so that's cool your teach showed it. But the most to raise your eyebrows about would be the sex in front of a kid at the beginning. I'm sure every 16-yr-old has heard "G--d-mn" at least once in their lives and all the incest you see is a kiss that last less than 5 seconds.

If you love Jesus Christ and are 100% proud of it copy this and make it your signature!

Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

Some people take things a tadbit too far. They act like it was a XXX movie or something? So stupid!

I think this is an excellent movie. But what was the educational significance for your class? It is a rated R film and parents should absolutely have the right to know what their kids are being shown in schools. How do they know what issues might be brought up that they should discuss with their children/young adults if they haven't seen the film themselves? God knows you can't trust teachers in today's school system to have the time or inclination to do that.

is it because of the incest?

Somebody's got to lead this revolution and I guess it's gonna be me.

reply

No it is because of the overwelming ignorance

My psychology teacher showed us A Clockwork Orange in class, two years ago in the 12th grade. There are 11th graders in that class also...and who the hell says, "Hey mom, guess what we watched in class?!"

Alright, I told my mom because some girl said, "I can't handle dis!!!!" and ran out of the room and how could I not tell people that hilarious story? But I mean...I can't imagine a parent of a 16 or 17 year old caring. This movie is nothing compared to ACO. Also, some teacher in the 6th grade allegedly showed his students The Matrix. But who knows.

Man I would have loved it if my school showed me A Clockwork Orange. That's like my most favorite movie ever. More because Alex has to be one of the most complex characters in film or literature but, I guess that's why you guys saw it in a psychology class.

I'm not surprise at all though that a girl in your class couldn't handle it, especially if it was her first time watching it. My mom sat me down and watched A Clockwork Orange with me when I was 14 and the first time, I had to walk out the room. It wasn't the third time, I could actually sit all the way through.

I'm surprised that parents were upset that the OP's teacher played Eve's Bayou though especially if the group of kids are 16 and up (considering the R rating is for 17+ audience). Plus Eve's Bayou is pretty tame for an R rated film and probably wouldn't have had an R rating if it wasn't for the incest aspect. But that's probably why teachers should always hand out permission slips before showing a movie, my school did that.

It's one of my favorite movies so I was really happy...but yeah my teacher didn't even hand out permission slips. He was kind of crazy/did whatever he wanted haha. I'm totally not surprised that parent's complained about this movie though, because it definitely has "mature themes" and some people are really sensitive to that kind of stuff. My parents were never really like that so it seems super weird to me but...again, understandable.

Parents suck.
