Connection with Cinema Paradiso???

There seems to be a similarity with this movie's plot and an Italian movie, Cinema Paradiso. In Cinema, an old man in Italy tells a boy about a man who camped outside some girl's window until she loved him.

Does anyone know if this connection is intentional? Maybe it's a classic Italian tale, since Peter's family is Italian and so is Cinema?

Some help would be great (I'm writing a paper and the info would be helpful).
Thanks.

I know its been a long time since you posted this, but I just caught Eight Days a Week on comedy central and looked it up for the same question you had-- is this inspired by Cinema Paradiso? Paradiso was a beautiful tale designed for film lovers, and likely, the director of this film was fond of it. The links are too obvious-- an italian protagonist named Gueseppi- the name of the main character in Cinema Paradiso, and the imaginary mentor in this. Also, his grandpa was named popo right? guiseppe went by toto to those who loved him. Certainly, there was an inspiration here, though Eight Days a Week was no way near the quality of film. http://www.myspace.com/codyduscha if you have any more questions, i love discussing film and cinema paradiso is one of my favorites

oh duh, not to mention the theme of the movie, waiting outside her window until she loves him, which was how alfredo taught guiseppe to earn his woman's love...

you mentioned the grandpa's name is Popo, it's actually Nono-which still proves the point you were trying to make about "Cinema Paradiso" homages.
