Fontenot

Why did Fontenot join the expedition? Before they are leaving St. Louis, Edwards mentions a letter written to him. Fontenot's like "The letter? Ah... Yes... the letter..." and later, when they meet the Indians, he's like "HAHAHA! HOHOHO! Why do I laugh? Out of the hundreds of languages I speak fluent, this is, uh... not one of them..." It seems that he joined for no reason at all! lol

Well, his motive in joining was to get paid. Edwards' motive for hiring him is that he believed that Fontenot could speak the languages of the Native Americans, and they needed a translator.

To be precise, Edwards really wanted Shaquinna. He really didn't need Fontenot.

Well, yes, once he met Shaquinna. But when he originally hired Fontenot he didn't know about her.
