Rarely have I seen worse

This film was so bad and so painfully unfunny that it actually annoyed me. It actually made me mad that it was so incredibly awful. It didn't raise even a smile at any point and so I didn't make it to the end.

It would be easy to just dismiss my comment by saying it's just not my type of humour. But that would be wrong (firstly because it's humourless!) but mainly because I have liked most of those involved in this in previous films.

Tommy Boy really made me laugh and Farley's comic timing in it is really very good. I like Perry for the most part, I quite enjoyed Friends, he was very good on West Wing and is holding his own in Studio 60.

Eugene Levy has a plethora of strong and funny roles under his belt.

What's most dissappointing is to see that Christopher Guest directed it. That's just sad. The man directed some of the funniest films I've ever seen. Spinal Tap and Best in Show being prime examples.

How could Guest read this script and think that it's a good idea for him to direct it?

I notice it's the only writing credit for one of the writers, the other has no further credits after this; not surprising in the least!

A truely shockingly bad film. What a sad final film for Farley.

I'm just suprised that you have such a good taste in comedies (I totally agree with you on Spinal Tap, Best in Show and Tommy Boy), yet you find this film so unfunny.

Every gag could be seen coming a mile away, it was so painful waiting for the stupid gag that you know is coming. A prime example of how bad it was is a very simple gag, which when done right can be quite funny. Perry is sitting by the fire and as he looks around he catches the eye of the girl (don't know her name). We've already established that her father (Levy) will kill anyone who looks at her. As he's looking at her, Levy's head comes into view behind her with a menacing look on his face.

Perry's reaction could have been at least a little bit amusing if he had looked away immediately or instantly pretended like he was doing something else like the overused stratching of the head. But done with some timing that can still be funny.

Instead he froze like a rabbit in the headlights of a car for what seemed an age before he eventually looked away. It was as if he was saying to the audience 'oh look, I've been caught looking at the daughter, I better make it absolutely clear that I've been caught by freezing then when I'm sure everyone in he audience knows I've been caught.... then I'll slowly look away. Painful!

And the Shi t Pie story?? Come on. It took him so long to tell it and it turns out he has no brother so he ate the shi t pie himself. Painful. And Perry's reaction where he says something about it being an interesting twist if I hadn't seen him use it elsewhere I'd say he has no comic timing whatever.

Perry's perfromance looked to me like if fact he knew just how bad the film was and he was pretty uncomfortable being there and saying the crap lines he was given.

It could also be because Matthew Perry isnt that funny to begin with.

reply

He isn't very funny, but he's definitely funnier than this movie.

Pretty sure Spinal Tap was directed by Rob Reiner.

Pretty sure you're wrong. My god man, you're already on imdb - how hard is it to look that up instead of making an ass of yourself?

I know it must be hard to live like this. Criticizing present experience; getting picky with the living now. You know?

What you lack is a sense of perspective. What you lack is depth, my friend. You are a pool of stagnant water, buzzing with mosquitoes, foul reek rising off the surface. This is how you choose to be?

You must have had a hair across your ass while viewing because this is a classic funny Farley movie. Get a trim and rewatch son..
