I know this is way off topic but does anyone know what he said to give someone when they give you a knife so that it doesn't "cut the friendship?"

reply

Hi! You have to give a coin if you get a knife, or so it goes.

Thank you sooooo much.....

There are the first Rambo movie "First Blood" and its remake "The Hunted", but those are more man vs nature vs other men films.

"Hell in the Pacific" is a very good survival movie about an American soldier and a Japanese soldier stuck on a deserted tropical island during WWII.

"Enemy Mine" is a kind of sci-fi version of Hell in the Pacific.

"Lifeboat" is a good old Hitchcock film about a few people stuck on a, er, lifeboat in the middle of the ocean.

I believe Robert Redford's "Jeremiah Johnson" is a man vs nature film though it has been many years since I last saw it.

"Man in the Wilderness" is another film that I've heard is in a similar vein but I haven't seen it yet and it's not on DVD yet. It also has a killer bear in it. I've heard this is a pretty good film and might be worth tracking down on VHS. Richard Harris was the star of that film and he was also in another great film titled "A Man Called Horse" that's set in the wild west about a white man who gets captured by an indian tribe.

"The Naked Prey" is a great film about a safari hunter trying to survive in the African wild while being pursued by tribesmen. Unfortunately, this gem is also not on DVD yet.

Of course there's "Castaway" with Tom Hanks, but you've probably seen that.

There are a few versions of "Robinson Crusoe" but the only one I've seen so far was 1989's "Crusoe" which was pretty good. Of course, it's not on DVD yet though the one with Pierce Brosnan is.

"Alive" is based on the real life story of a school soccer team who the survived a plane crash in some mountains out of the middle of nowhere that had to resort to cannibalism. This film kind of grosses me out, but you might like it.

Finally, I highly recommend "Walkabout" about a teenage girl and a young boy stuck in the Australian outback and "A Far Off Place" with Reese Witherspoon about a teenage girl and a teenage boy trying to survive the African wilderness. 2 meh, cheesy teen survival films are "Blue Lagoon" and "Paradise".

I hope I've given you some help!

"The Ghost And The Darkness" 1997 (Val Kilmer, Michael Douglas)

Based on a true story, set in East Africa at the end of the 19th century about a pair of man-eating lions who killed over 130 people over a 9 month span.

Val Kilmer stars as Patterson, a brilliant engineer ordered to build a railway bridge across the river Tsavo. There, he encounters the lions, who feast on the local workers, and seem to have a supernatural knack for knowing what traps await them. Patterson soon teams up with lengendary Big Game hunter Remington (Michael Douglas) as they set out alone to hunt down and stop the unstoppable beasts once and for all.

One of the best I've ever seen is "Man in the Wilderness" with Richard Harris, supposedly based on a true story. This one may be slow at times, but is very good for the location footage alone. I highly recommend it, for whatever that's worth, ha-ha!! And of course Jeremiah Johnson is not to be missed, either.

Wow, I can't believe nobody's mentioned JAWS. I mean the original, of course, not its lame-o sequels.

The Naked Prey... only one I know with the same intelligence.

Jeremiah Johnson - just saw this recently and I have to say it is a little slow, as are most Robert Redford movies, but it is a damn fine man vs. wild movie.

reply

I just saw the movie, "Prey." African lions instead of a Grizz and the acting wasn't as good, but it will hold your attention.

Three films come to mind that haven't already been mentioned.

The first is "A Cry in the Wild," the 1990 made for TV movie based on Gary Paulsen's book Hatchet.

The second is the 1969 family film "My Side of the Mountain."

The third is "The Bear" (1988), which is more like bear cub vs wild than man vs wild but worth mentioning nonetheless. Bart the Bear is in both this film and "The Edge" (amongst others).

I was totally gonna say "A Cry in the Wild."

It's based on a book I loved as a kid called "Hatchet" I think. Great book for a kid to read. Good movie.

Southern Comfort (1981) is another good one in a similar vein to Deliverance.

I'm genuinely convinced that every movie would be better with Arnold Schwarzenegger in it.

"Into the Wild" recent, but good.
