They died saving my life.?

Charles says this in the end.. But two men died because of stupidity..

I agree with you. The only quote that doesn't make sense. He was saving their lives, because he knew many things about surviving in nature.

I think it was alluding to their involvement in the entire ordeal. It 'saved his life' in the sense that he realized there is more to life than reading about other people's experiences in books and was able to overcome a challenge he was unprepared for.

well it may also mean that since charles now know that his wife was having an affair with a man who even tried to kill him..so in some ways his life is spared.who knows in future he will be more cautious with his relations and whom he can rely upon.

reply

True. Remeber Charles also spared and saved a guy who was in the process of killing him. Charles was just a great, forgiving man. I think he was just trying to make the other guys seem like the heroes, rather than take credit himself. They were gone. It would do no good to tell the world that they died of stupidity.

Also, the perspective Charles gain led from the whole ordeal gave him "new life." Remeber the comment about him considering not going back.

He was having a crisis of boredom and stagnation in his life. They make it clear he doesn't really get fired up or excited about anything except random trivia and information. If the ordeal had not gone down the way it did he would have never felt alive anyways. He learned something and the value of his life thanks to a near death experience. So they saved his life in that his life actually mattered to himself now when it didn't before.

Plus, it goes to show that he honors his enemies/friends even in their deaths and would not say anything bad of them.

Keep in mind, they did actually help him out on several occasions fighting the bear too it wasn't only him saving them the entire time. So there is a practical purpose to what he is saying because it is partially true but he also is making an inner point. There is a subtext to what he's saying and it's about his life finding new meaning and value thanks to the two men.

They died of shame, the movie says so.

Hopkins character is just gracious enough to not say so the media, for three reasons:

1 - A billionaire has experience with the media, and understands (pre-twitter) that what you say in certain situations can have ramifications.

2 - A person who has just gone through "an unequivocal" event tends to be more reflective.

3 - he said he was going to change his life ( but doesn't say in which way). This final comment foreshadows that change - he's going to become human, instead of winning everything by knowledge.

In.civilisation you can make.a.mistake and.it.won't.be.fatal. A knife.can.slip and cut your leg and the ambulance is just a 911 call away. Have you ever had to call them? A few.stitches, a cast, a pair of crutches and you're on you're way to mending. Don't forget that DPT jab.

In the wild the same injury can kill you. How is that stupid? It's an accident. Accidents happen to human beings. You don't seem to comprehend how the location is what makes the difference between survival and death. Welcome to reality. One day the location of your own accident may make a difference in whether you live or die.

There is something called situational intelligence. Someone with the set of skills necessary to survive in.a big city is taken to.a wilderness area or brought to Africa and dropped into a Masai tribe. Is this person still smart? What do you think?

Robert Green (Alec Baldwin) didn't know not to put the bloodlines cloth in.the tree. He baited Bart (it was.Bart the bear, playing a wonderful role as starving crazed grizzly). If he was hunting grizzlies, Robert couldn't have done better. He was that guy in the situation with no.skills, the wrong skills. You think he was smart or stupid?

Edit: however, the real answer was one that only came to me after an epiphany. He didn't decide to return from the woods until after Bobby died. It was because of the two deaths and the bear kill that Anthony Hopkins decided to live.

Charles was a man of honor. After all they had been through he chose to let them die with honor. And they did save his life.

All 3 shared their part in creating a triangle of survival.
