Do you know if the English subtitles are any good?
I want a friend of mine to see it but he happens to be American and can't speak French at all, which is even worse...
(now you can throw rotten tomatoes at me)
My guess is that some of the jokes could not be "Americanized": Am I right? Is it worth it to see with the subtitles?

It's definitely worth seeing, but if he doesn't know a word of French, some of the jokes aren't going to make sense. (The "Juste LeBlanc" scene is one of them.)
I don't really know French but I did take it in high school and from what I could gather, the subtitles are pretty decent, but not 100% verbatim.
shareSubtitles just can't make every nuance felt and heard (or read) especially in such a "wordy" movie.
How about "Con" in the first place , that word allows a lot of nuance from what can be a very mild word in french to a not-so-mild word in french.
and it's different in english and even more so in american-english.
- 3 "C Word" with very different use in everyday talk.
I'm glad that apparently the subtitles are pretty good in american-english.
Ruining the experience of such a good comedy just because some people don't speak french yet want to see it , then get crossed because it was nowhere as good as advertised would be a crime.

I don't remember much about this movie because I only saw it once several years ago but I found the Marlène Sasseur part pretty funny. But that's one of the parts that you would have to know a bit of French to get the "sa soeur" part.
I'm American & I don't speak French (but before you condemn me & say stupid yank, I do speak pretty fluent German)...
My friend is taking French in college (I think he's in his first year)... His teacher wanted the class to watch a French film & he ended up picking this one. We watched it over at my place last night.
I can't tell you, obviously, if the subtitles got everything they were saying in French, however they do well enough that his girlfriend & I (neither of us knowing French) were able to understand & really enjoy the film.
Nope you don't need to know French to get this bit. In the British version of this they change her name to Hissister in the subtitles....
shareJust watched it tonight - the translations are pretty good but they have to manipulate the French puns to try to make sense of them. Another thing that suffers is Pignon's use of silly phone-answering rhymes; the English rhymes that take their place are pretty stupid (even worse than the originals).
