DVD help

Anyone know if there's a difference between the Universal & Lionsgate Region 1 DVDs. I've heard that the English subtitles are burnt into the Universal but it's got a nice transfer. I see that the Lionsgate has English & Spanish subs but was wondering if it had the same transfer or if it's inferior to the universal.
