Inconsistency

The first time John talks to the guinea pig, guinny says that HE (talking about himself) understands Doctor Dolittle, like that's something new, like he couldn't understand him before...which would make sense...except the Orangutan speaks french...And later the guinea pig asks why do they call him that. If he didn't understand people other than John then he wouldn't have known that they called him that.
I can accept the fact that he talks with animals, i can accept the fact that every animal in the planet, except for humans, seems to speak the same language (well, the monkey spoke french, i have assume it was some sort of universal language of animals from france), but this one just bugs me.
I still liked the movie, i just hate it when little details like that appear and i can't stop thinking about them.
Also, i think someone asks him "did you just bark?" or something like that at some point...Does that mean that everytime he talks with an animal he Barks, meows, etc?
...it makes sense...
Nothing more.

Actually the orangutan spoke Spanish but I agree with you. Just because he had something happen to him so he could understand what they are saying, why can they suddenly understand him?

It's because he now hears them in "human language" but he also talks to them in "animal language".
As his wife said, he barks when he's talking to the dog (even though him and us the viewers just hear plain english...).
He pretty much got a human<->animal language converter in his brain.

The orangutan is a little weird true.. why would he hear him in Spanish?
Maybe the animal speaks in a dialect of its own country...
