The main character's brother discouraged him from his meaningful relationship with his fiance, and even encouraged him to cheat on her, but then he settled down to have a meaningful relationship. When confronted, he told his brother, in so many words, you should not have f...ing listened to me. I guess he did not want his brother to have something he was longing for all the time....but suppressed it.
