Very enjoyable! Surprised about little activity here.

One of my favorite films! Great music, all of the acting worked well and the story was good. So how come no one is on this board?

In 2000, I and my sister saw this film on DVD, with subtitles. It was the first Bollywood film we ever saw, and straightaway we became hardcore Bollywood fans. My sister became a fan of Karisma Kapoor, and I became a fan of Yash Chopra (and SRK, of course!) Many films have come and gone in Bollywood, but this one always holds a special place for me in my heart (I’m the one who added all the quotes).
Still, I think I can understand why it’s not a widely discussed film. To begin with, there isn’t really much one can discuss about relating to this film, even for a diehard fan like me. Secondly, if you check out the user comments, some of them say that it’s nothing more then a fluffy fairytale romance. In fact, Bollywood biographer Rachel Madeline Dwyer wrote: “Audience reports were mixed. Where were the features one expected of a Hindi movie? Where was the plot? Who were these people and where were their families? Had Manhattan come to Bombay, with its loft living, designer clothes and jazz dancing? Where were the Yash Chopra hallmarks of romance, drama, love songs, and a saturation of beauty? Had 'dostana' become an episode of FRIENDS? Had Yash Chopra gone too far in challenging his audience? The industry thought its top banner had made a mistake and muttered, ‘Yash Chopra to pagal hai.’”
My opinion: Yes, this is perhaps Chopra’s most urban film, but it still holds his magical mix of music, romance and Swiss mountains. There IS a story beneath all that urban chic, the tale of a love triangle between an urban man, an urban woman and a traditional woman (There is a DDLJ touch here - another reason which may explain the indifference). The story provides a solid and coherent foundation for the film and from there the actors, the music, the sets and definitely the direction work upwards to create a masterpiece. It’s a film about love and friendship and how the two can be blurred.

I agree. The melding of "play" versus "movie" was very well done. The love triangle (indeed, quadrangle) was well conceived and the music simply fantastic.
This is one of my favorites (and seems to be received fairly well 10 years later) yet it shares the same fate which "Paheli" received (that too, is doing very well, albeit 10 years later). Both movies are definitely out of the "norm" and that's part of their many endearing qualities.

Great movie but I couldn't help but be like "I've seen it already" as in I've already seen that story line etc.. The reason I think the movie is great is because of the Madhuri - Shahrukh jodi they were both just simply brilliant and their chemistry was great and also Karishma Kapoor was great as well..

After having watched this movie so many times I still can't decide which pairing I like better--- Madhuri&SRK or Karishma&SRK... They were both great. I did like the ending though - where Karishma was "found" by Akshay.

I saw DTPH and thought it was okay, but felt like I had wasted my time after watching it. SRK annoyed me, especially when he twisted Karishma's arm to make her apologize and say that he was the best, grr...

Karishma was okay, but her name was Nisha and she lost out, double grr...

Akshay was okay, but his voice annoyed me.

Madhuri was okay, and I liked this movie just for the pre-conceived adoration I hold for both her and SRK - neither were great in this, IMO.

The music was great, but I wouldn't watch it again unless I had like NOTHING else to watch.

I agree! I love it, just saw it for the first time last week, had to buy it!! Great the way the 2 soulmates keep crossing paths but not quite meeting at first, awesome!! Also great dancing, this is the first time I have seen Madhuri Dixit (call me Johnny come lately) She is the best dancer!! I saw on wikepedia how she had won so many dancing awards, I figured I should check her out. Hey this is only the beginning!!

I have to have the soundtrack on CD music is awesome too!!
