Mega, Rob Bottin is the makeup effects genius who worked on "The Fog", "Robocop" and, most significantly, "John Carpenter's The Thing". His effects work on that movie is considered some of the best of it's kind, if not the best ever. Unfortunately, Bottin's brand of effects work is becoming less and less in demand thanks to all the Computer Generated Imagery that film companies seem to prefer now.

there is a great article here that explains some of it but this is the most essential part.

"The initial approach towards the effects intended by Sommers was to use a majority of practical effects, with an animatronic tentacle scheduled to be built. The digital counterparts were to be implemented only for the more visually complex sequences. After the first Computer Generated test, however, the director eventually decided to use digital effects for most of the film."

This is what made Bottin feel the same way Winston did when they were shooting Jurassic Park. For Jurassic park they were gonna use animatronic AND stopmotion. But that´st nother story, Personall i dont really like stopmotion at all looks terrible and is perhaps the only bad thing in JC´s the thing. "Ending Blair monster"

So rumor has it Bottin realized his skills will get replaced maybe work asa consultant which is NOT what h e wanted at all and not by his standards with the howling the thingfog robocop i mean this guy really made movie magic!

but he saw the future and what it would mean for him and he left.... he´s in real estate now :S it´s weird and his like completely off the grid no one really knows where he is at he doesnt want to do interviews or work in hollywood again it´s so damn sad.

Sad indeed. Legions of fans would be eager to pay tribute to him at any horror/sci-fi convention in the world.

I thought the Blair monster at the end was a practical effect rather than stop motion. Did we see different versions of the movie? Do you have a reference for that?

reply

It was, but there is deleted footage showing the Blair Monster in stop motion form that sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of the effects.

Yeh that was really quite bad, especially given the quality of the rest of the effects.

I love Rob and he directly contributed to a lot of the best practical effect work of all time in film (particularly in some of my favorites)

BUT I would argue that Deep Rising is hardly the worst example of bad use of CGI. It doesn't look particularly great, but if we're talking about a GIANT tentacle monster flinging all around a ship at the proportions in which it does- it would be prettyyyy hard to pull off practically

I love "The Thing" but most of his projects, like that, involved somewhat reasonable amounts of effects to pull off. great creature effects are doable practically- and often look the best that way- but if we're talking about endlessly lengthed tentacles that are 5 foot in diameter and fling around in great speeds like muscles- good luck pulling that off

she fell through a hole, and was never seen again

I'm just watching it again now and have to agree with you, I think in this case CGI rather made sense. I'm actually quite surprised how good some of the effects still look, granted it's not a particularly old film but still, they don't look out of place at all and stand up quite well to some medium budget cgi flicks today.
