For a Sci-fi..

For a sci-fi movie that was written, directed, and produced by the same person. I still feel that this is one of the best sci-fi's I've seen in my time.. Any other like minded have any other recommendations? I still try to catch this one at least once a year..

I love this movie too. It's hard to give recommendations based on it since it's pretty unique (how many sci-fi noirs can you think of??) but others that you might like:

The City of Lost Children
Gattaca
Strange Days
Brazil
Existenz

For this viewer, Dark City's production design rules supreme. For a similar movie where production design is everything, watch Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004). Three caveats:

1) It's a lot less dark/noirish.
2) While Dark City was filmed on actual sets, Sky Captain was almost 100% blue screen/CGI.
3) It was writer/director Kerry Conran's first (and still only) major movie.

I liked the movie but the scifi was borderline cheesy. Mainly the ESP waves coming out of our protagonist's head at the start of the movie.

They could have removed the cgi and just have the box open that his wallet was in. This would have left his new power a bit more ambiguous for a bit longer and the viewer wondering if this power is just in this guy's mind.

These things took it down to Scifi TV movie for me.

Still a good movie but not a classic. 6/10

If you want something as cerebral as this, maybe Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Wait, you might've seen it already. Ah well.

Yes I have. Great movie.

Good, I guess. Sorry I couldn't think of anything else - Dark City is pretty unique.
