Did John actually create a star or was it something else?

At the end when the sun shines for the first time outside the city, did John literally create a star using the Strangers' machines or was it just an artificial light? Or did he fly the city ship in orbit around a star?

I got the sense that he just rotated to platform so that the star rose up into the sky. And i think it just rotates now for night and day.

since we see shots of the city from afar before there's any sunlight, it can be assumed that the city/ship was no where near a star (and heat must have been maintained like everything else) So I do think that while the 'sun' came up at the end, it wasn't a star per se, as its not likely John could make a life-sustaining sized star far enough away at a large size for it to be similar to our Sun and earth. It was probably a 'mini' star that might not have even actually given off heat, just immense light.

My impression was the platform was tilted to face the Sun, or a similar star.

To be absolutely certain, you would need to ask Proyas, but that's my feeling as to what he was trying to convey.

The platform tilts, the Sun is revealed.

I'm very certain that John just turns the City toward the Sun (or, if the City isn't located in our solar system, the central star of the solar system that the City is located in). There's no indication that John creates the star that we see and the only indication of movement we see is the City turning at a ninety degree angle relative to the star. Also, while a movie trailer probably isn't strictly speaking "canon," the ending of the trailer for the film implies that the underside of the City faces towards the sun (leaving the inhabited part of the City in shadow) because it shows us what looks like a total solar eclipse.

the movie gives you the impression that John creates a sun/star since there is no prior sunlight any where, but this seems unlikely from an astronomical/physics POV. It makes more sense that the city disk was just always oriented away from the star (dark side) and John just tilted it, but then... unless John gives it constant rotation, its always going to be daytime...

Unless I missed something, the "tuning" ability used throughout the film is the manipulation and re-arranging of existing reality, such as putting a door into an existing wall, and then removing it. I don't recall any instance throughout the film where something is created out of nothing.
