why don't they just evacuate the 'townsfolk'?

they only reason why they don't (it seems) is the bald guy moans 'we are not the only town...in the state!'

well, so? tomatoes aren't the only ingredient in ketchup too; what does that have to do with anything?

Because if they do people might not come back to the town.
And they loose money.
They did not know how long it would be till it blow.
He made another town evacuate and the volcano never went up which was said in the movie.

i guess. maybe if it was a vacation spot (like jaws) i'd see the money angle playing making more sense.

Geological events generally happen on a much longer schedule than Hollywood portrays. I'm not sure what a more realistic timeline would have been, but I think it would have involved the town being evacuated for a much longer period of time.

While that's true, Volcanoes can ramp up pretty quickly. The movie stretched things a bit, but hypothetically, it is not impossible.

The towns business was dependent upon Elliot Blair's investment. If they evacuated the town then Elliot would pull his investment and the town would lose money. Afterall you don't want to invest your money in a town that is going to blow up in a few weeks.

If I remember correctly there was mention of a similar incident years before, but it turned out to be a false alarm. Everyone left the town, and it went bust. They don't want to risk that unless they have absolute scientific proof the nearby volcano will erupt.
