When people ask me what is the worst film I have ever seen....

The answer I have given for the last 5 or 6 years has been Dante's Peak. It was shocking then and I remember loathing it with every fibre of my being. I regret not walking out on it and am actually disappointed that it still rates above 5 on imdb. I can't actually remember specifically the reason for this hatred, only that it is blind and unadulterated and has festered bitterly over the years.

Would anyone else place it at the top (or towards the top) of their WORST FILM EVER list?

I actually really liked this movie, I don't really know why, but its a movie that I can just watch, it plays like a really big budget B movie and those sort of movies are my favourite. King Kong, jurassic Park, these are all B movies at heart. The volcano in this movie is the monster. You can say that you hate it and I can see why, but for me I chose it as one of my all time faves.

This is a very watchable film. The chemistry between the actors is good, and the special effects are believable. I try to see it every time it's on.

reply

yup. same here. watching it for the third time now :)

reply

Same with me. I can watch it over and over again and I don't know why.

We think it's the most enjoyable disaster movie. I guess it's a mix of the characters and the general atmosphere. We watch it every couple years.

The OP has obviously never saw The Royal Tennebaums before. Yech.

Come with me if you want to live.

The Royal Tenenbaums is amazing.

That must suck not to be able to enjoy that movie. It's a classic.

reply

I quite enjoy this movie. There is a certain amount of disbelief in the events but it's a movie.

If anyone asked me about this movie I would not rank it amongst the worst movies I've ever seen.

I'd say #1 is Anaconda 3......

reply

Royal Tennebaums was terrible, and I liked all of Wes Anderson's other movies. It is not funny.

Watch Kevin and Perry Go Large and come back here and tell us if you still give the same answer.

I must confess that I forgot what is involved in posting an opinion in this forum and the level of vitriol that goes with it. Admittedly my opinion is one filled with hatred toward this picture, but even so. The therapy that I am in need of may have more to do with having sat through the film in the cinemas many years ago, rather than walking out after 20 mins.

Nevertheless, I understand the accusations of troll when it comes to bringing on the hate of a film. But this is clearly no randomised hatred of a genuine troll who posts 'Worst picture ever made' on Citizen Kane, Gone with the Wind or even modern classics. This is just a good old fashioned bad movie where the audience cheers for the volcano to erupt out of sheer boredom and marvels at the plasticine acting along the way.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I have enough hate to go round for quite a few films, especially almost every single Adam Sandler film ever made. It's not as if I come on here just to share the hate. But I do have a special place set aside in my heart for the horror that is Dante's Peak.

I am not putting you down if you enjoy this movie - good luck to you in fact. I, for one, enjoyed the Royal Tenenbaums. And for the record, call me any name you like, but my favourite film of all time (at the moment) is Memento.

No film is worth hating it. At best some are worth to be ignored. If you really DO hate a film then you DO have issues.

You're saying THIS was the bad movie that you'll need therapy over? You're kinda a dumbass then. I mean this was one of the best movies scientifically wise and you're throwing a *beep* over it? I think maybe you should have your imbd account revoked since you obviously have no clue what you're talking about with movies

reply

Did you seriously just diss on Adam Sandler AND Donte's Peak all at once?? Seriously you have terrible tastes.s

reply

Then apparently you haven't watched "Volcano"... I'm watching it for the first time right now, and all I can say is... dayum, this is some bad crap!

... the hardest thing in this world is to live in it...

reply

Got to hand it to the OP, they may not like Dante's Peak, (which I love, by the way), but it's not as if they've got no taste in films. (See Memento...)

Dante's Peak is a weird one. Personally, it's one of my all time favourite films...because I love Geography and I remember when I first watched this in my Geography lesson, I adored it. Plus, Pierce Brosnan... ;)

I can understand why people may not like it but I can't see how someone can hate it THAT much. The acting wasn't totally horrible, Pierce was as fine as he always is, and I thought it was cinematographically acceptable. But, different tastes for different people.

Do you mind, Locksley? We've just been married.

As a reply to the whole post, and specifically to yours, I agree. Of course I thought Dante's Peak was good, not great, but good, better even than a mediocre movie like Twister. I definitely go along with the idea that it was better than Volcano.

Mate, I sure wouldn't, but I think I can get where you're coming from, and thumbs up for being honest!

Personally, I love this flick - though I probably can't give you any more reasons for my love than you can for your hate. Oh wait, maybe I can: at heart it reminds me of the disaster flicks we used to get on TV on weekend afternoons when I was a kid, that we'd sit and watch when the weather was bad and my mum would make us sweet corn and bacon fritters for lunch. (My guilty confession is that, as well as loving this film, I also love "The Core" - another flick that plays fast and loose with physical reality - and probably for the same reason.)

To be fair, I think this film achieves a decent degree of suspense, has some great sequences (when the surface tremors first hit the town, for instance, or the scene where the debris-swollen river sweeps away the road bridge), some enjoyably dodgy acting and - with the notable exception of the shot where the pyroclastic cloud blasts a row of houses and pine trees that are clearly models - generally the special effects and matt artwork are exemplary.

Hmm, I guess I found some reasons after all!

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

Gota agree with Gavintheman. This is certainly not one of the worse movies- not even of the month it came out.

Worse of all time? maybe Sabretooth, The Pumpkin Carver,...
