Sacrificing Presidency

Instead of sacrificing his apparently almost certain successful bid to become president in exchange for the altering of Yolanda's prison terms, would it not have been more beneficial for Bardem to become president, then he would have the power himself to change the terms and do whatever else he had planned.

I thought the negotiation was a bit of an overeaction, though I know the purpose was to show how he felt about her.
