Jessica Lange is too hot for this role.

Seriously.

I mean, just look at the poster that's on the IMDb page. In the movie they really go out of their way to make her seem plain but you can see the GLITTERING in her eyes and what FRENCH man wouldn't be intrigued by that?

Her performance was stellar but seriously. In what world would Jessica Lange be considered plain? Hollywoodland apparently.

seriously...

with great makeup and costuming, they almost succeed at making her "plain"...almost :-)

Very true. The role calls for someone decidedly unglamorous and they choose Lange? Even in her advancing years she's far too attractive.

She has done this kind of work before- playing against beauty. Lange was a beautiful woman who has aged gracefully into a lovely older lady. I think she's perfectly capable of hiding her beauty from the world when she chooses. Just as she can be beautiful when she wishes to. Your admiration of her is to be commended but as she ages you'll find her in movies and shows that rely on her acting not her face. Good example of that is American Horror Story.

I agree.

But in support of the film, I have to commend that they didn't hide her beauty. Bette was played as a woman who wasn't allowed to reach her potential in favor of an even prettier family member. It also made the sting of Hortense stealing Wenceslaus even more foul.

They shouldn't have had the scene where Jenny dolls up Bette though. Lange was more gorgeous than all the female leads put together in the film and that certainly wasn't the intention of the story.
