De Niro eating sandwiches

he even turns something as ordinary as eating a sandwich into a show stopping set piece.

"yknow.. they never give you any napkins in this place, what am I supposed to use?"

reply

You're right! That quote made me laugh.

The sandwich scene is pure unadulterated DeNiro. The turning point of the film is when he says "You blew it!" to Stallone. My favorite scene in a very very underrated movie. There's some incredible acting going on here from all concerned parties, and Mangold did a fine job on directing and writing. Always amazes me when a great ensemble piece like this or Glengarry gets no traction at the Oscars. I mean, really. What else do you want?

reply

Yeah, it makes me want to eat the same type of sandwich he's eating too.
But they never give you any napkins!

looked like one of those deep fill sandwiches. thick white bread, lettuce so maybe a BLT? ('Heat' reference!). looks like he got a soft drink to go with it (coke?) not sure what the yellow thing is he bites into soon as he opens the wrap ? a twinkie? lol

some sandwich discussion in the comments here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUQ9ZKUt2XQ

rewatching again it after however many years I never realised until now after his associate (Carson) offers him the tissue box Moe goes 'you want this?' offering him the other half the sandwich! (which Carson takes!) I thought Carson had his own!

buts lets look at what Moe says again:
"yknow.. they never give you any napkins in this place, what am I supposed to use?"

sounds like its from the building they are in - the canteen (not from outside like an Irish sandwich bar like I imagined) and the annoyance theres no napkins - sounds like hes had them before there and they never give out napkins. maybe theres a self service stall place you can get them like McDs/BK and Moe never remembers or knows. perhaps its not a regular thing for Moe to get sandwiches, instead usually he takes a proper hot lunch in the canteen but due to work this day had to settle for sandwiches? (unless hes a like regular sandwich at the desk guy and its one of those things that he always forgets to napkins)

or theres another (more intricate) explanation about the whole sandwich scene. Moes got his sandwich from canteen for lunch (or maybe its breakfast if he missed breakfast? depends what time it is when freddy busts in but im thinking noon/lunch time - anything from 12-2) is about to enjoy it in private (as usual. hes not a sit down at the canteen type guy) then Freddy busts in with Carson talking about the Babitch case etc. Moes angry with freddy leaving it so long. loses his appetite. he puts on this 'who gives a *beep* ' act to freddy - complaining theres no napkins, giving away half his lunch and playing Carson with looks etc, as a kind of distraction to make freddy feel small and unimportant. tells freddy 'was 2 weeks ago, its over.' then as freddy gets more frustrated moe really gives it to him 'YOU BLEW IT!' freddy leaves dejected knows he cant get help from them 'you people are all the same'..but all the while Moe has been playing freddy so he'll get fired up and go back to Garrison and cause trouble - 'that cupcake makes a mess we gotta case again.' its the way Moe quickly discards the sandwich after Freddy leaves and finally uses the napkin (tissue) to wipe his hands - like the sandwich went from being the most important thing for moe in front of freddy - 'no napkins. here you want half. om nom etc'. to the least important thing.. like he was using the sandwich as a prop to wind freddy up into doing something

anyway, I gotta go. im off to get a sandwich. and complain that theres no napkins..

The yellow thing was a pickle. And the bread looked like marbled rye. Being New York probably a pastrami sandwich. Now I'm hungry. I miss NY sandwiches.

"Go to lunch!": Spacey in "Glengarry", Deniro in this.
