Stallone's best peformance???

I think Stallone was unreal in Rocky 1 and 2 but then he fell in the Van Damme Seigal genre in the late 80's and never really got enough credit for his acting in earlier films. Copland gave him a chance to put on his acting pants again and he delivered. He nailed the shy dopey Sherrif and made the movie something a little more than what the weak plot/story had set out to give.

Agreed! I have much respect for Stalone as a writer/director, but movies like this, ROoky, and Paradise Alley really show he can act.

I agree also. This was one of Stallone's best performances. Very subtle, very low key...but that's why he nailed it wonderfully.

Stallone is brilliant in everything he does.

He's also very good in The Lords of Flatbush, First Blood, and Lock Up.

Those 3 plus Rocky and Cop Land constitute a fair top 5 (performances).

He is good in First Blood! I think the quality of the early scenes of him walking around being a disgruntled Nam veteran are overshadowed by the fact that there is a million scenes and sequels after where he just runs around the jungle blowing things up. Which is also quality.

I did laugh in Cop Land though when he sees the deer.. his face haha.

Watched this again for the third time and I really feel that he should have received if not just recognition but an Oscar for his performance for his role in this film!! Sylvester did an beyond excellent job in this!!

reply

Agreed! Is one of my favorites!

Loved Stallone's almost unrecognizable performance in Cop Land! Really proved himself as a great actor... more surprising, a non-egotistical actor! Thought he deserved an Oscar nom, at least!

And the scenes with Deniro yelling at him... priceless! "That cupcake makes a mess, we got a case again!"

Stallone has always been an underrated actor. See him in First Blood, Rocky, Rocky Balboa, Rocky 2 & 3 (the crying scenes), and especially this film.......Cop Land. The guy knows how to act in accordance to character. And he always nails it! Give him a lot of credit. He is an Oscar winner after all.

I always felt that his best scene was with Adrian on the beach in Rocky 3. When he was pouring his heart out to her and expressing his vulnerability and fears. The movie was overall cheesy, but this scene gave us a glimpse of top notch acting from him. I've always had tremendous respect for Sly's acting abilities. It has always outshadowed other actors in his genre of action, beat em up, kick everybody's ass filmmaking.....which I love by the way.

Cop Land showed us what he can really do and what he is willing to do to make a fine performance memorable. He gained weight and was slovenly which we cannot bear to even think Sly would do, but he did it, and he did it full force. He lead this movie filled with iconic actors/actresses and did it with with gusto. He lead the pack. Kudos to him and for an Oscar-worthy performance in the underrated "Cop Land".

Bravo, Sly.

No one mentioned another film in which he downplays his role, and also gave a great performance in doing so, called Nighthawks.

Couldn't agree more. Paradise Alley and Lock Up and now Cop Land. Stallone has always been a good actor. He just got pigeon holed as Rocky. (he did win several Oscars for rocky - maybe the Academy feels they've recognized him enough?)
