Would they make Contact now

and release it in to a fractured America? One half would perhaps embrace it as an optimistic vision. One half would see a plot by the deep state to waste all their money and attack the existence of a god.
Might make an interesting series though which would offer the opportunity to tell what happened next. It could be a multi-generational story line with the next contact being decades in to the future. If it was a 'simple' science fiction story that's possibly how it would be written now - but I doubt that was ever Sagan's intention.

It was a novel by Carl Sagan, and highly technical to boot. I started reading it, but lost interest.

I loved the book the book when I read it years ago but I cannot remember why anymore - perhaps I should read it again sometime. But what I was trying to say is that if the book had been been written by an 'ordinary science fiction writer' then they and their editor would probably have blocked it out as at least a 2-3 book series that covers several 'small steps' and eventually full contact is made. But Sagan was not such a writer and it's probable he saw no need for any kind of sequel.

say what?

It just struck me that this film was made in more optimistic times and that it could be boiled down to a simplistic science vs religion - which would be very attractive to certain factions in the twitter-sphere and further afield.

Yeah, they could as long as the lead is a black transgendered female who hates America.
