Matthew McConaughey is the worst thing about this movie

Not just his performance but the character itself is useless. Why is he constantly hanging around the White House? He's not even a government official.

One reason they needed him was to have someone for her to come back to. She never had a mom and her dad died when she was a kid. She was pretty much alone. They had to sneak in a romantic relationship somehow

reply

Yes, but the character hardly seem to show much passion for her. Started off by lecturing her about life. Maybe McConaughey just couldn't work up much enthusiasm for Jodie Foster, so they wrote it that way, (I know I wouldn't be able to act passionate towards her, that's for sure!)

LOL Shots fired!

Yeah I've seen a lot of movies and those two definitely didn't make a good couple. No chemistry at all

"LOL Shots fired!"

Haha, that's good. I'll use that. :)

I don't know; been awhile since I have seen it; but if I remember correctly the worst thing about this movie was just how ridiculously slow and boring it was; and then there is no payoff (the 'alien' take the form of her father, there is a short boring conversation and there is no proof it even happened) so slow boring movie ended up feeling totally pointless.

reply

The point of the movie isn't about the alien, it's about how people would react to the knowledge of an alien civilization. I think it's a pretty interesting question. Certainly more engaging than another phaser-blaster slugfest.

Well said

That might be true; but that does not mean that it needs to be an incredibly slow place that basically sucks all tension and engagement from the film.

Now I have not watched it since I was like 17 or 18 the late 90's so my 'remembrance' of how boring it was might be inaccurate. But I watched it with my uncle, father, older brother and younger sister. Everyone was equally bored. Maybe that is just my family. :)

reply

We've had films like that since The Day the Earth Stood Still and War of the Worlds. That's not interesting.

reply

No, both of those films are about direct interactions with the alien. This is distinctly different.

But hey, if any movie that touches on any topic that has ever been presented in another film is automagically "not interesting" to you then my guess is that you haven't seen or cared for a new film in a very, very long time.

There is nothing interesting about the resolution in Contact. A walk on the beach? I would hope the novel offered something more.

reply

I agree. He was the worst. Not a good character and not a good performance. But I didn't like Jodie Foster much more. Her 'breathless' acting gets tiring. I hate that ending. I wonder if that's how the novel ended, too.

reply

John Hurt was the best thing about this movie.

reply

I BELIEVE HE WAS LOOKING FOR HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS.

reply

Why was a Bible bashing surfer dude anywhere near a science mission?

I despised him. He was a dick to Jodie Foster's character too.
