A Symbolic Interpretation of the Film

Alice has a boring job and has started taking drugs. Because of this she starts getting increasingly paranoid and even gets some bad anxiety attacks. Both Jerry and Dr Jonas are part of her imagination that represent the forces of good, Jerry who she identifies with, and evil, represented by Dr Jonas, or "they". These forces are both part of her drug induced paranoia.

She has a big panic attack due to a drug overdose, when we see Jerry getting tortured by Dr Jonas and is admitted to a hospital. At the hospital she meets another drug abuser who dies of a heart attack. She is scared that it could have easily been herself instead of him but the "charts were switched". This helps her to stay clean enough to get out of the hospital.

But she is unable to lay off from drugs for very long and again starts to get paranoic episodes. We see these on screen as epic chase scenes through the city which include helicopters, military weapons, car crashes and other wild things. They are all creative representations of her drug trips.

In the end she is forcefully admitted to a drug rehab by the cops. The scene where Jerry is lying in the abandoned room of a hospital shows how she is trying to cope with the withdrawal symptoms while she is in rehab. The cops who took her there are represented by Agent Lowry and his team.

In the end we see that she is free from her drug addiction, represented by her riding a horse, which is kind of like a symbol of freedom. Jerry, who represents her fond memories of drug use, is still in the background but is controlled by the cops and agrees to stay away from her. Basically she is scared of getting involved with the police again and going back to rehab, and that takes care of "Jerry", we know this when Agent Lowry tells Jerry, "Don't even think about it... At least not for now."
