I was watching this on DISNEY+ and boy, gosh, I've got to say I was shocked that there was no preceding disclaimer for the unacceptable historical depiction of the Irishman Malloy.

Honestly he'd have been a more rounded character in an Englishman, Scotchman and an Irishman joke.

I mean we're in 2021 and it's still ok to go - "Look see, here's an Irishman, he's an utter baffoon. A moron"?

I'm kind of shocked Disney would allow this as they are usually so ahead of the curve on this sort of thing...

It wasn't a stereotype. Colm Meaney was playing the character using his real voice. He's Irish.

I was aware that the actor is Irish. However that hardly makes it better. Worse in fact that the Irish should be so downtrodden that they feel the only roles they have available to accept are playing to a baffoonish stereotype.

I mean can you image him reading the script without shedding a tear or two at the indignity?

Well I'm Irish. Didn't bother me at all. As a matter of fact I'm glad they didn't make him mask his voice with a phony accent and let him play it normal.

Even if the op is Irish he's still bonkers. I'm Australian and have seen some pretty crude representations of our society in film. Never been offended though.

What scene is he particularly stereotypically racist in? I will watch it on YouTube now. I haven't watched the movie in a few years so I can I agree I may be a tad ignorant in this argument.

It's not that he's racist, it's he himself who's the stereotype. An angry, short termed, stupid Irishman.

The question was whether Disney - given their usual standards - should apologize for this representation with a disclaimer before the movie begins on their streaming service.

It's a ridiculous caracture. Are you not also offended by seeing this without a Disney offering a disclaimer for it's dated representation of Irish people?

I thought I was being progressive - Out of the films I've watched recently, Malloy comes second only to Jar Jar Binks in terms of being a walking stereotype.

no, yes, insisting a discaimer be attached is a progressive (and apparently left wing) viewpoint - they wont be with you on that score.

but in the abscence of a woman or colored person to hate on, they'll bemoan the treatment of a white person as "not fair"
(and in doing so inadvertantly switch sides i guess)

what did his being Irish have anything to do with the character?

He was the stereotypical myopic, hardass, idiot cop whose only real purpose is to serve as a foil to the much more level headed and outside the box thinking hero cop. That role could have been played by anyone of any race and been the same in every way.

Pretty much every Cop movie has this character(usually more than one), but they definitely aren't always Irish.

Of all the things in this movie someone might be offended by today Malloy isn't one of them.
