Things that don't make sense (CONTINUE THE LIST)

Don't get me wrong, I like the film. I think it's highly entertaining. However...

1) how come the bunny suddenly reappeared at the end (out of nowhere)& how come the Nicolas Cage character ever think it's a good idea to STILL give it to his daughter after it has been in the gutter and looks absolutely disgusting? Give her some money! It's flying all around.

reply

First of all, his name was Cameron Poe. Second, I'm sure he had been waiting a long time to give that particular bunny to his daughter, Casey, who he has never seen. Once his mind is made up, he's not gonna change his mind and give her cash ( which would have been a highly impersonal gift for a little girl ). He felt bad that the bunny ended up all beat up, but I'm sure his daughter would cherish it for years to come, regardless of its condition, knowing it came from her father she had never met before.

The box marked "Do Not Open" at the prison. Why would these guys invest their time and resources in such a meaningless self-destructive device.

Last movie watched: Con Air (7/10)

It was designed to destroy the journal where he wrote his plans, also whoever found them. Later they lie about how they found out about them in Carson City (we're going to Disneyland, I guess we're both liars) to cover up that they found the journal.

reply

STUPID! All that money flying around was property of wherever it came from. Second, giving cash as a gift is just lazy, it's too easy to give someone money. He felt the bunny would be a more thoughtful gift since he protected it throughout the entire movie and he went through hell to get that bunny to her. It could very easily be cleaned up and have it looking like new.

Please, they need a transponder to track an airplane? Did they discontinue Radar in California in the '90's. Unidentified planes in unreported flight patterns aren't noticeable enough? Did I miss some explanation for this?

reply

The movie was pre-2001, security measures changed a lot since then.

reply

In pre-2001 times, an unidentified object showing up on radar in California still caused a great deal of concern. Obviously the monitoring of aircraft movements had been beefed up since then, but it wasn't exactly lackadaisical before.

It's perhaps not a major plot hole issue with regards to the narrative, but it is a valid objection for the critical observer.

I always wondered how on Earth Cyrus managed to get explosives into his cell. It's not like its a regular cell either. Besides - the break-away brick work? How did he manage that too?

reply

did you not pay attention? He said himself that he didn't want to see his daughter grow up from inside a prison cell

How do drugs get into prison? Probably the same way Cyrus got the explosives or the ingredients to make an explosive. As for the brick work, Cyrus probably learned how to make that by reading up on it or learning from other inmates how to do that. Inmates can be very resourceful.

I always found it odd that The Virus actually put a warning label on the plastic container. Perhaps it was a reminder to himself, but it seems oddly public-spirited of him. A prison guard or cop opens it anyway and wins the Darwin Award.

"Chicken soup - with a *beep* straw."

I have actually flown on USMS prisoner flights. There are many things that don't make sense.

While the prisoners would be handcuffed and shackled, they would not be locked in cages or shackled to the floor of the craft.

Random pilots don't fly, US Marshals do.

Officers are armed, and there is no 'Armory' of automatic weapons on the plane- there is no need for it.

Bureau of Prisons Officers (not guards) would not man the flight. In my case, it was ICE agents, however US Marshals would usually be the ones manning the plane.

This was an awful movie, but I can't help but watch it when it is on. That doesn't make sense either.

Continued...

A DEA Agent can't make a random phone call and have attack helicopters show up to pick him up, and then authorize firing on a plane not immediately endangering lives.

The murder of a DEA Agent does not authorize another agent to bring the killers to justice "At any cost" or whatever the quote is.

A US Marshal can't just call a local police department and order them to send in "Everything they have".

Poe's conviction doesnt make sense.

Poe's incarceration in Federal Prison makes no sense.

All of these were like a slap in the face when I saw it. I just kept thinking as the movie played on, "are there actually people who aren't offended by the level of stupidity in this movie? It's like 2012, the action movie"...

I just watched it to see the bunny scene. How much sense does that make?

THREE people were witnesses to the fact that it was self-defense. Cage (still counts as a witness), his girlfriend (a biased witness) and some random dude who came running at the end with the girlfriend. That would have been the point that I said to myself "oh it's going to be THAT kind of movie"... except for the two scenes that preceded it.

Cage wants to have a private moment with his girl. In the middle of a dance area in a rowdy bar. Two guys decide it's a good idea to hit on his pregnant girl with a trained soldier known for his short temper (before going to the military).

Some more:
Please, please, someone enlighten me, WHY do they A) inform the wife that there has been a problem, B) fly her by private jet to the headquarters of their little operation C) to ask her one simple question - which she answered with "I have no idea" and was apparently no help whatsoever in Cusack putting 2 and 2 together.

And WHY for the LOVE of PETE is the little girl with her in that city and in the room during the questioning???

What was the purpose of the code thing that was apparently just a means of Cyrus keeping notes for himself? Just to make Cusack look smart next to really dumb everyone else?

For transferring the prisoners, the entire exchange happens out in the dust storm. Meanwhile, Chappelle is chillin inside a huge hangar with great lighting and not a speck of dust anywhere...

The entire Lerner Airfield sequence was painful.
In the surprisingly populated, empty airfield, ok, so kill the guy in the tower. OK. But also destroy the mic? If they weren't sure he was dead... Also, the plane is going to land there. Period. That's the plan. They neither need nor will ask for clearance to land.

Guy sitting under a truck by himself. His biggest worry is he has to pee?

Propane tanks in a junkyard would not be charged. There's little reason for that much propane in the first place.

When they take on new prisoners in Carson City, is there not a female prisoner who gets on? And never shows up again - with only the tranny to give them their kicks?

In what universe could a group of a dozen or so guys with ropes pull a plane sitting on its belly in soft gravel any distance at all? All those trucks sitting around and the best way is guys with ropes?.. and whipping one or two of them?

Where in the heck did that girl live? In a house next to a dried up swimming pool - in the middle of a semi-abandoned airfield?

Why did Cage go off to get a fuel truck, then promptly completely fail to get a fuel truck and not get questioned about it?

There are shotguns in the belly of the plane (really?)... ok fair enough, prisons - shotguns. But assault weapons? On a plane carrying a couple dozen prisoners? What possible use could they have except mischief?

An assault team in fatigues (mixed with cop cars) goes through an obvious pinch point without even attempting to make use of the terrain/features.

Also, an assault team arrives by motorcade consisting mostly of cop cars. Yep, that's the fastest way to get there. No need for choppers to do aerial recon.

And speaking of helicopters, how fast are those attack helicopters? Not only can they catch up to a cargo plane traveling at 200+ mph with a 300 mile head start??? AH-1F Cobra (modernized) maximum speed is 170mph (about the same as the cruise speed of the Fairchild when not in a hurry), with a 'never exceed' of 195mph. Oh and they can only carry enough fuel to do 300 miles *if* they conserve fuel and don't drive around at maximum speed... Should have been at least two refueling stops...

Why are all the syringes in a medkit for an airplane made of glass? I haven't seen a glass syringe in years. Needle plus syringe has been the way to go for a long time and the syringe is usually plastic.

What the hell happened to the handcuffs on Cyrus's hand on the ladder truck??

Where the hell did he land? A quarry in the middle of the Sunset Strip?

Pulling Johnny the rapist out of the plane shows pretty plainly that the arm isn't attached... right after showing that he's dangling from that arm.

Just a constant barrage of "how far can you suspend your disbelief"

Alright, here's my wacky fan theory: she didn't live there, or anywhere.

Remember, Greene is the only who interacted with her, and he's a serial killer who is most likely mentally ill. He imagined her.

Why? I dunno. Maybe while he was in prison he prayed to God promising to stop killing and devote his life to Jesus if he could get out. And when he found himself in the middle of a prison break, he saw it as divine provenance.

Okay, that's nowhere near as wild a fan theory as Ferris Bueller being Cameron's alter ego, but what do you want? This is Con Air.

Maybe the prisoner that asks Cyrus what the rock is was really the smartest person in the movie?

2) the whole movie

They were carrying an arsenal of high powered weapons underneath the plane lol.
