Joaquin's shoulder

What's up with it? I also noticed it in Walk the LIne. It almost looks like his chest is inverted. Is this a birth defect or what?

reply

I don't think there is anything wrong with it--I could be wrong. I used to have similar shoulder blades that have actually become less prominant as I have gotten older. My mom used to affectionately term them my "angel wings" they just stick out a little more than other people's.

reply

Well it looks more like a chest things than a shoulder thing. He slumps forward and his chest looks inverted.

In Gladiator he is not wearing a shirt in one scene and I see nothing wrong with his chest, I just think maybe one of his shoulder bones is bigger than the other

reply

I think it's just his posture. He's always been kind of a slumper. He even did it in Parenthood when he was a teenager.

reply

I don't think anything is wrong with his shoulder, but he was born with something wrong with his lip. i forgot what it's called, but he had surgery to fix it.

reply

he didn't have surgery to fix his lip. He was born with that scar, and it looks like a hare-lip surgery (i think that is what it is called. And it does look like there is something wrong with his shoulder, but it is more likely just his posture.

I don't know if this is it or not, but if you work your chest too much and your back less, that can happen because the muscle gets too dense and the back can't hold it back.

Joaquin Phoenix was possibly born with a birth defect called, "Cleft Lip-Palate", where there is an incomplete closure of the roof of the mouth (cleft palate) and an abnormal groove in the upper lip (cleft lip). Surgery to correct these disorders would have left the scar that you see on his top lip and below his nose.

Many newborns enter this world with this disorder.

Also, Joaquin was possibly born with a disorder called, "Pectus Excavatum." This disorder is caused by an overgrowth of cartilage between the sternum and the ribs, which causes the bone to turn inward. This causes the concave appearance of his chest and the roundness to his shoulders.

This disorder is quite common in male newborns.

Joaquin may have had surgery to repair this disorder when he was younger. What we see today, may be the result of the surgery. His disorder may have been considerably worse than what we see in him as an adult.

I hope that I have enlightened you with this information.

He was not born with a cleft lip/palate, and he never had surgery. The "scar" is just something he was born with.

reply

His cleft healed in utero. It's a microform fusion. There's a syndrome that includes a cleft and contractures(tightening of ligaments) that he may have had. If you look very closely, the only stitch line is right along the base of the left nostril. My guess is that the cleft didn't completely close. His facial features are otherwise quite normal. He's quite hansome, in my opinion.
