John Irvin !

I really enjoyed this movie and consider it a cult hit, also do a few movie fanatic friends, comparing it to "To Live and Die in LA". Severely underrated solid movie in my books.
Anyone else agree this movie deserves more attention along with certain other John Irvin Movies/Shows?

Definatley agree!!, the reason this movie is not more popular is living proof of the decline in Viewers requirmwnts! basically to make a box office movie you just spend all of your money getting the latest model in it and just make it as crap as possible!!

Yes, it's a good flick and compares well to "To Live and Die in LA" -- it could almost be a sequel to that movie. Makes for a good double feature!

I also dig Irvin's "The Dogs of War."

Absolutely agree, especially the Live and Die in LA pairing.

One of the reasons both movies succeed as well as they do is the use of actual neighborhoods and locations in South LA and Long Beach.

Yes I agree. It is a great film! There are only a few I will watch over and again. This one. 'Heat', 'To Live and Die in LA' and 'The Departed.' I like most of Keitel's work starting with 'Mean Streets' but the flick he made with Madonna just doesn't cut it.

I totally agree. I saw this movie in 2000 when I was a junior in highschool, and loved it. Though Harvey's 'old school' character Roy Egan was awesome, I liked Skip Kovich more. I've watched it a few times since then, and must say that it ranks as my favorite movie of all time. Now that I've grown up a bit I can appreciate Roy Egan more, but still I am intrigued by Skip.

I think Irvin made much better stuff than this actually. His best work has got to be "Hamburger Hill", and "When Trumpets Fade" which were it not for "Saving Private Ryan" should have been released theatrically because it was such an amazing war film!

The only reason I disagree is because this movie is so bad, it's like having tin foil pressed against your fillings. I love crime movies, I love Harvey Keitel, I think Timothy Hutton is an under-appreciated actor. I also think Stephen Dorf is an angry midget absent from his circus, I think the direction in this movie was all over the map, and I especially think the scene with Keitel beaten up, crawling on the lady's lawn was so laughable, the writer or director might as well have been pissing on my eyeballs.

This is a bad, BAD movie. This is a movie that starts off with a good-enough premise, then as you're watching, falls apart, then tries to pull itself together, but in such a roughshod way, you might as well spend your movie ticket money on used Kleenex. It's so poorly done, if you try to claim you enjoy it, you're either lying, or have such bad taste you could run a tube from your butt to your mouth and trick yourself into thinking it's chocolate pudding.

I'd go into more detail, but it's been two years since I saw this, and it was bad enough to last me a lifetime.

Seriously, if you think this is a good movie, I hope it's because of some serious brain trauma. Otherwise, there's just no hope for you.

I agree with you. The movie was inconsistent at best. However, I'm the kind of film buff who'll watch a bad movie with excellent performances. Keitel alone is enough reason to watch the movie. My standards are low I suppose...

Yup it is, one of my most watched DVDs in my collection. Can play the entire movie in my mind scene for scene, but still enjoy watching it, never get bored with it.
