Question about the ending (spoiler)
So did John die at the end or did he just fall asleep? Also, what's the significance of the fish heart?

I have watched the movie several times, last time yesterday.
All is very symbolic in my opinion:
It is the very first day that HK is in Chinese hands and that day the destiny of all the characters change:
John dies
Vivien decides to leave her past aside and looks into the future, leaving HK and starting a new life
To me Jean (Maggie Cheung) symbolyses HK inmediate future: despite changes seen as critical things will continue to be the same for the people there
And the heart is HK heart, despite all still alive and beating
Believe or not, despite the famous director and actors this film has not been distributed in the UK...

My reply comes about 7 years after your post but I saw the film for the first time last night. I like your analysis of the fish heart. Excellent. Not sure about Jean. She was clearly disillusioned about her true relationship with William (the British?). He never felt for her what she feels for him.H
