where did the father get the money for new shoes?

my rental copy started to skip at the end so maybe I missed something but I do not understand where how the the father had money for two pairs of shoes when he was 5 months behind in rent.

reply

Shoes for his children were just much more important to him then the rent. I doubt his gardening skills got him rich but he could have got enough money to settle the rent and have enough money to get shoes to his kids.

reply

were we to assume the father bought the shoes though the son didn't get third? what a sad note to end on if not...

reply

you don't have to assume it coz it is shown in the end...........

when Ali's father is walking back to home with his bicycle towards the end, it is shown clearly that he has a pair of girls shoes at the back of his bicycle....

reply

I think he had two pairs of shoes in the back of the bicycle. The white girl's shoes on the left and a light brown on the right.
Anyhow these kids acted amazingly well in the film. Well done to them and the director.

reply

right. He got shoes for both his children with the money he got from working as a gardener.

Does the OP think the father lost the money when he crashed the bike? Also first prize included an athletic suit. Couldn't Ali trade that for shoes?

reply

I am thinking it was gardening money. But if I am not mistaken near the end of the movie it was close to Norooz (Iranian New Years) holidays in Iran and during that time most employees get some sort of bonus so they can buy gifts for their families.

at some point in the movie the kid points out to his sister that their father is only going to get paid the next month. Then when the father and son are returning home on there bicycle after the whole gardening adventure, there the father says that he has earned enough money that he wont need to work for the rest of the month..so maybe he worked for rest of the month and that money added with the money he earned by gardning was enough to pay the rent and get the shoes..also we can assume that if the father goes to city twice a month and works as a gardner while rest of the month he works in his town..he will make enough money to survive the month comfortably and buy the motorcycle and refrigerators.

the film didnt had a low ending, the kid won the race and both of them got a new pair of shoes, he got photographed (assuming it was press) and became popular, he must have also got rewarded by the school for his over all performance. The girls shoes those were stolen were torn already (referd in the film) so they wouldn't have lasted long anyway. the girl gets a new pencil, a new pen and finds a new frnd. The other kid in the city(where they do the gardening work)also gets a frnd.
So every body gains.

everybody's a winner!!!

thats what we like!

nice film. a bit too simplistic, and the humour was limited, but those kids were just Gold on the screen. They made the film work.

It seems to me the father's bike is fixed. So I assume he can and is gardening uptown, has the money to buy 2 sets of shoes and food, and things will be better. It seems the childrens' humbleness, love of others, and love of family has been rewarded.

Even at the end, when both children feel they have one pair of shoes, the daughter does not cry but runs off to attend to the baby. And the son takes off his shoes (symbolizing his poverty), soaks his feet and is blessed by the angels, and both children will shortly receive new shoes (representing their rewards / prosperity) and full meal. So through their sufferings for each other and others, their family has been rewarded.

I'm curious how this ties to the pillars of Islam.

I am glad that you liked it; and it says a lot of good things about you.

But SIMPLISTIC?
I think not.

Unlike in most of (even the best) Hollywood films, there is absolutely nothing "over-spelt" about it. The storyline is simple, yes, but everything else - including its gentle humour - is wonderfully life-like in its complexity.

thanks for watching the movie and understanding the point,i think people should see movies and admire them in true spirit instead of looking for flaws in the movies
does it realy matter that from where father got money

Well said.
It sounds like such a basic task, but apparently leaving one's cultural (and other) luggage behind can be trickier than it seems.
Still, there's no true enjoyment in film without doing so - not in my opinion, anyway.

I wish many more people would see this little gem!

this is my answer to a question "explain the ending" in another discussion. just go to point 7.

******THIS CONTAINS SPOILER*******

Read this in chronological order.
1. Ali won the race unintentionally when he aimed for the third position. He wanted to give her sister the 3rd place prize, a pair of shoes. So winning becomes meaningless because the prize, although much more expensive than a pair of shoes, is not what he wanted.

2. next scene, his father just got out of a store with a lot of groceries, including NEW PAIRS OF SHOES for his beloved son and daughter.

3. next scene, ali looked sad because he cannot keep his promise to his sister. He cannot give a new pair of shoes for her.

4. next, Ali took off his broken shoes and nothing weird about goldfish eating peeled off foot skin from a scar.

5. next scene special for you: his father got home and gave Ali and Zahra a new pair of shoes for each! They were happy and dancing uncontrollably. Zahra got what she wanted, and so did Ali. plus, he did not have to give his pair of shoes to Zahra, he could keep it for himself. and suddenly being a winner of the race did not seem so bad anymore! He told his parents he won. Now it's his parents turn to dance uncontrollably.

6. next scene again for you: Ali and his family spent 2 weeks with his family at a holiday camp from the prize of winning the race. and he's wearing a set of sport suits, another prize for the winner.

7. His father got a semi-permanent job as a gardener of a rich old grandpa. and he recommended his father to his equally-rich old friends in the neighborhood. and ali's father finally could pay off his overdue rent that had been 5 months behind. and now they moved to rent bigger house.

so at the end, everybody won. got it? if you still dont get it, maybe you can switch 2 with 3 in chronological order.
