Man, this is a GREAT film...u gotta see "The Color of Paradise" by the same director/writer...Majid Majidi....it is even better than "Children of Heaven", also "City of God" is great, but it is of a different nature. U will LOVE "Color of Paradise"....I promise. Thanks, Ken.

It was a BEAUTIFUL movie. It was so touching how he was depressed because he couldn't get the shoes for her even though he won first place.

one of the best films i have seen in a long time.

A zillion thanks for suggesting this movie.....up until i laughed at people when they told me that they cried during a movie, but today I cried four times while watching this movie..........

Everybody should watch this movie..........

Everyone should watch "Baran" by the same director, Majid Majidi. It is a brilliant movie.

Try Cinema Paradiso by Giuseppe Tornatore - the original version, not the extended one.

Also Malena by the same director.

You might also like The Bicycle Thief of Vittorio DeSica.

If you really like movies about the triumph of human spirit in adversity, Fiddler on the Roof is my all time favourite.

The Shawshank Redemption - another phenomenal movie but different in content from Children of Heaven.

I must say you have very good taste in movies if this is your personal favourite movie.

see white balloon, it is also from iran. and 'In america'.

Humans don't know what is love...they only possess, intimidate or dominate...and they call it love.

reply

Beijing Bicycle is kind of like this film. It's a Chinese film.

These kids were awesome and so un-Hollywood that it was truly refreshing. It's so nice watching kids who aren't "on" or trying to be precocious.

For Persian movies: Taste of Cherry, White Balloon, and The Wind Will Carry Us (named after a poem by the Feminist Persian poet, Forough Farrokhzad) are by the Iranian master Kiarostami. Silence and Gabbeh are great atmospheric movies from Makhmalbaf. Mohsen's other film of note is The Color of Paradise. For socio-political movies Leila cannot be missed, Maryam, about an Iranian-American teenage girl facing discrimination and harassment during the hostage crisis, and Secret Ballot is a really interesting look at a zealous woman trying to get rural Iranians interested in voting (we aren't that different after all!).

And if you just believe, like me, that it's refreshing to see movies once in a while that are more innocent, get into Bollywood! Not so strong on the stories but they are colorful, and sweet (though often saccharine). An acquired taste though. If you prefer the art house flavor, you might not like them; but try and be open minded - they're worth it just for the elaborate dance numbers.

Sib (the apple) from Iran
Ayneh (the mirror) from Iran
Pedar (the father) from Iran
Dare mo shiranai (nobody knows) from Japan

Click Beleive me, even though it's a comedy, it gets really depressing towards the end, and makes you realize that money is nothing in life, and that family is!

reply

King of Masks
Bicycle thieves
the 400 Blows
Red Beard
Grapes of Wrath
Nights of Cabiria
Tree of Wooden Clogs

"Tuvalu" - a non-American-made fable close to Jeunet or Gilliam. It is not sentimental in the way of Children of Heaven, but nevertheless I think it speaks to a similar audience. It is a more raw and cynical look at human nature, but one of its protagonists is a naif who manages to reel in a good ending.

Third vote for The Bicycle Thief (Italian).

reply

and the fourth vote for "the bicycle thief"
