Whats up with the pig eating the trabant? What does it mean? Or is it simply a way of showing how much time has passed?

According to some people, trabants were made from cardboard. The movie confirms this stereotype and it is supposed to be funny.

Yeah, this is true. Shortly after 1989, when I was a boy, we traveled to the still-exist GDR. I kicked accidentally a stone against a Trabant, and a big piece of the plastic-similar material was cut out.
