*spoilers* Why is it called Black cat, White cat?

I enjoyed this movie very much, and YES, I DID notice two cats wandering around in the movie. Doing their thing.

I am not complaining on the title, I'm just a little interested in how it works when choosing titles for movies. Was the idea that the two cats represented the people who loved eachother but the circumstances didn't allow them two, because of them being too different? I mean, it's not like a Romeo and Juliet-story, because there did seem to live pretty close to eachother and was allowed to hang out. They weren't too different.
Perhaps the long mustasch-guy och the short cute girl were abit different, but they were not really the main characters of the story.
Was it about two different families getting along even though it seemed impossible at first?

I hope you understand what I mean. I think it's a good title and a good movie, but do they really fit together? I mean, this is probably not the only movie where you can question the title's relationship to the movie.

I believe the black cat and the white cat simbolise all the people in the movie, they live together without racial prejudice.

I watched the movie long time ago, but as far as I remember the main character is gypsy (roma) - and his 'love' is white..

reply

His love is not white. She's gypsy too, only with a lighter skin. It's not uncommon.

Hungarian title is "Macska-jaj". Cat=macska, jaj=whoaaa and Macskajaj=hangover.

reply

I think the title has no meaning at all. It's just an easy way out - to show a bit of black cat and bit of white cat, and you immediately have a metaphor of contrast.

The evil of the Thriller.

reply

only a superficial contrast. in the dark, all cats are grey

reply

The cats are the (required by law, apparently) wedding witnesses.

Aside from that, it's a catchy title.

And fate is commented on by the tall man who ends up marrying 'Ladybird'.

A bird sings and the mountain's silence deepens.
