Anyone who does NOT like this movie?

So, are there any? I for one love it and only know one person on this board who said he didn't like it. I don't know what it is, apart from the crazy, fast paced and completely wacked script, that makes this movie so genuine and universal.

reply

I think there might be. :(
People who gave 1/10 for this movie.
...I don't know... Just as it was mentioned by someone...this movie should be in the top 250. Honestly.

reply

I didn't like it. To me it just seemed like generic slap stick used it many other movies.

reply

If you don't know the area, the people, and those times, it would be.

But except for some surreal stuff, almost everything in that movie could've been found in real life here, in the Balkans, back then.
Some elements are still found, albeit the world has changed even here.

reply

Agree. In the opening minutes of the film there had been so many crude attempts at easy laughs e.g. people tripping and falling, that I decided that if the father accidentally dropped the new washing machine in the river, I'd give up, on the grounds that the rest of the film was going to be filled with yet more predictable, strained slapstick. And sure enough it fell in the river. Yawn. So I never got more than ten minutes into it. Maybe it got better later but I just lost faith in the director.

reply

One guy who'll never see the nail-pulling scene, because he can't deal with a genre's character-establishing intros. E.g., "father is incompetent, but not a bad guy" etc.

Might as well not watch black & white movies because they aren't in Technicolor.

reply

As I said, maybe it got better later, and had I been captive in a cinema I dare say I'd have stayed with it. The director underestimated his audience by overdoing the obvious stuff.

reply

It does get better later. I found it crude too and didn't get any nuanced cultural references I must admit. But the second half, which is the wedding, really improved.

A bird sings and the mountain's silence deepens.

reply

I agree. I thought it was well made and creative; but, it was also all over the place. The dialogues are boring, background music super-silly, and the plot is just super boring!

reply

I think everybody has a stressfull life and that movie is like a sunday in the sun.

The couple having sex in the sunflower field is just a beautiful exemple.

reply

I liked it a lot, but I have to say the style was very 1930-1950s. Maybe that's what makes it so unique nowadays?

----
Rated R for violence, sexuality, and language.

reply

It wasn't 1930-1950.
It was the '90, during the petrol embargo, in which russians and romanians sold contraband petrol to the serbs.

And rromanes (gypsies) are almost unchanged since then - some rich, some poor, some good, some bad.
But a different people nonetheless.

reply

You misunderstood me, I was talking about the style of the film, not the era it was set in.

----
This post is rated NC-17.

I think you personally have to know the country and the culture to enjoy this movie. I was born and raised in Belgrade where I was surrounded by these types of gypsies. Otherwise the people who have critisized it really dont know what they are talking about. Movie should definitly be top 250.

reply

Markbulatovic, you are absolutely right.I'm from Romania, and in my country, like in yours,I am sorounded by this type of people...so i kinda felt the movie.I liked it very much.:)

reply

I'm "sorry" to say, but you definitely DON'T need to know the country and the culture in any special way to think that it's great. The fact that the characters are portrayed in such a crazy and absurd way makes them so genuine and unique.

Not at all. I'm born and raised in Belgium, I think I've never seen a gypsy in real life, but I love this movie. I watched on a Belgian tv channel yesterday (for the second time) so I'm def. not the only one :) One of the aspects why I like it that it gives me the chance to look at a completly different culture.

reply

I cannot agree with that.
Im chilean and loved this thing, and I know lots of people around here that loves it too.

reply

For me this is one of the most stupid and bad films in the film history. I agree totally with the last 4 comments that you'll find here:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118843/usercomments?start=60

and with the three here:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118843/usercomments?start=70

These people can explain it much better than me :-)

"This is not funny, neither when Carrey does it or this "director". I felt like dying watching this abysmal perversion of a movie sitting next to people enjoying it. People who think that they are educated and sophisticated. Wake up, it's stupid, it's silly and - oh - you've got my point."

reply

"de gustibus"

To be honest, i didn't find it funny.
And no matter what you see in there, it doesn't seem funny anymore once you know people like those, and the way they behave.
And it's all believable, for the people and the place and the period (except for the more surreal stuff).
And it doesn't inspire laughter, it brings memories, memories of years ago.
This isn't a comedy, this is a movie about life, with funny moments, sad moments, angry moments, and so on.

And without living it, you cannot know what it is.

I can totally understand how outsiders could've seen it simply as a comedy, and treat it like that.
Without the inside information, you do see it as a comedy, and you treat it according to the rules established by comedies you know. And by those rules, yes, it does suck.

oh, grow up!

I can picture you watching cartoons, frowning: Do not laugh!! Cats eat mice in the real world!!! It's not a laughing matter!

reply

This is the worst time I ever had in a theater. A two-hour exercise in vulgarity and poor taste. Still, for some reason, this is a popular film with arthouse crowds. Heaven knows why.

reply

I didn't dislike it, but I was a little disappointed. I didn't feel it was much of a progression in Kusturica's style. Decent enough for a watch or two, but not one of his best.

Best film: Koyaanisqatsi
Scariest film: A Tale Of Two Sisters
Sexiest film: A Bout De Souffle
