Yeah...i am from Bulgaria too...and i love this film..and i realise how much i love Balkans music and life here when i watch Emil Kusturuca`s films. You know life isn`t like in the films, but we do really know how to have good time....

reply

i am from bulgaria too. and this movie is absolutely hilarious. my whole family loves the movie

reply

Yeah! It seems that Bulgaria loves Kusturica. This is one of the greatest comedies I have ever seen. I wish our Bulgarian directors could someday learn something from Emir and stop making *beep* "art".

reply

Wish we had a better character in the movie than the Bulgarian customs official :p

i'm from Bosnia..:D

Dude*), it isn't necessary to be Balkan to enjoy this movie. You don't have to be Polish to enjoy (sic!) The Pianist, do you? Surely other people don't get 100% of all the jokes (the geese? are they symbolic?), but it's hell lot of fun, and most importantly, it's very, very original. I've had enough of those Hollywood movies, all made according to the same pattern.

*) I also enjoy The Big Lebowski, man ;)

I saw this movie while in France in '98 with my then-fiance, now-husband who is a cinematographer with adventurous, rapturous taste in film. Still have fond memories of watching the zaniness unfold -- particularly when the weding band is playing in the trees. I still describe that shot to people. But me, I'm just an American gal with a taste for foreign film. On the same trip to France we randomly wandered into the only movie we could find and ended up being blown away by Mike Leigh's Secrets and Lies. I remember sitting speechless in a crowded, noisy cafe afterward. I looked up this movie again after seeing the young actress on Big Love on HBO. Her beguiling face was driving me crazy, then I finally figured out where I'd seen her before. She's wonderful, very appealing.

If you like Branka, you should see one of her earlier career films from Yugoslavia, like http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118011/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_45
Low budget of course as it was being filmed during the war & sanctions, but it actually is about that particular moment in time in Belgrade so the're is less humor than in 'Black Cat White Cat', but still worth watching, not just for Branka's role and the story & script (though the latter may not come off as authentic in some of the english sub translations), but also for Nebojsa Glogovac, another very talented actor of the same generation from that neck of the woods.

I am in Winnepeg and I am quite the film fan. I have been following Kusturica's work for years. I believe he is one of the best. It's funny that the poster posed this question as it's a perfect example of the director's work transcending culture and nationality. Anyone who has not seen Black Cat, White Cat, Underground, Arizona Dreams is missing out on a truly incredible cinematic experience. Some of his work is hard to find but well worth the effort.
