what do aussies call an ice cream container

hilarious film -- think IFC broadcasta the dubbed version in the States, because when the wife tells dad she just scooped the ice cream out of the *** (tub?) her lips don't match the words...what does the Aussie version say? Thanks

reply

She says 'punnet'(I think) - but not all Aussies say punnet, we use container, tub or other things

"Shultz, close the gates! The wars back on!"

reply

thank you!

you won't hear "punnet" in the States...just "container".

reply

I've never heard anyone refer to an ice cream container as a punnet, usually tub.

a punnet, is what strawberries and most small fruit are packaged in - punnets usually have holes in the bottom for air and suchlike to circulate. "tub" is a slang word for a bathtub. containers usually have lids.

reply

Yeah, she said "punnet" although even at the time the movie was made it would be considered an older word that isn't used as much.

"Scooped it out of the container" just wouldn't have the same cadence though, so wouldn't be as funny.

I can remember when I was a child a pint of Ice Cream was wrapped in cardboard and called a "brick" because of the shape, in grocery stores you would ask for a brick at the counter.

These days you take it out of the supermarket freezer (usually in a 2 litre plastic or cardboard container) and put it on the cashier's conveyor without calling it anything.
