so did anyone else get reminded of Heavenly Creatures when they saw this? i haven't seen anyone say so, but i sure got that feel while watching it - Heavenly Creatures being the superior film, of course, but the satire and surrealism were both there.

Yes. Both films deal with problem adolescents, who retreat into fantasy, until they can't tell the difference, leading to tragic results. But films are, in my opinion, excellent.
