Recommendations?

I like the movie very much, so I wondered if someone had seen a movie that anyone who had seen this movie would have liked?
(Maybe a weird question)

The Magdalene Sisters, which just came out, would be my first choice. Disco Pigs would be a close second.

Film reminded me of A Clockwork Orange.

Silence, is the sound of nature.

you might want to check out heavenly creatures, another disturbing but beautiful film.

you can try other Irish films like the field, the bishop's story, the travellers but unlike the butcher boy they aren't hollywood production and they are way darker(and very boring).in the name of the father is a good movie.
if you want something lighter war of the buttons is a good one.(it's a recommandation from my Irish cinema teacher.but nobody dies in this one.it's more like a family film)

"Once Were Warriors"

p.s. "Heavenly Creatures" was a great recommendation also.

I think the Stendhal Syndrome is a great film about someone losing their mind. Totally different than the Butcher Boy but eerie and dark and fantastic. I have to agree that Heavenly Creatures is a great recommendation. Also, Picnic at Hanging Rock... and if you want a little weird/dark humor... well I guess we've probably all seen Heathers but just in case you haven't definitely check it out!!

I don't know if you're even checking this anymore but I am having fun reccomending movies so I thought of another one: Delicatessen

reply

Cannot agree more with Delicatessen and Heavenly Creatures. I might add to this great collection of weird and dark movies a movie that I'm probably the only one to know, The Young Poisoner's Handbook. Again, the story of a teenage psycho, but with a poisonous twist. A must see!

'Breakfast of Champions'(1999) with Bruce Willis,

it has the same sort of humor, and its an intriguing twisted story, also a bit thought-provocking

hope it helps

Life is a state of mind.

definately disco pigs...
but go see breakfast on pluto when it comes out... i havent actually seen the butcher boy, but i read the book, and BoP was also written by Patrick mccabe and directed by neil jordan... so it has the same kind of darkness, but it is happier, the character is an optimist throughout the whole book/movie. it really fabulous

A little late - but what about "little criminals" a canadian film - superb and very moving - and the young actor who plays Des reminds me very much of Eammon Owens.
