very bukowski ... just as good 10 + years down the line
i saw this at the cinema in the uk when it first hit and told all my pals to go and see it ... actually only one of them did , but she loved it
...
recently ive been going back and catching and reliving all the films of my youth ( ! ) and i picked this up on vhs : well it hasnt aged a day and is still as sharp charming and funny as i recall
i particularly like the bukowski-ness of the lead guy , not just his post-office-ness but the whole shabby / cool dour-ness and devil-may-care voyeurism deviancy and couldnt-give-a-crap-about-the-job-ness of him
also , the main actress in this , in this film , defined what was to become a important female icon for me in terms of my affairs and relationships : the kooky redhead ... who works in a launderette and has hearing aids and lives off breakfast cereal ... what a woman . where are they now those queens of unkemptness , those angels of dishevilment ?
