Locations of the Film

I know that the movie Breakdown was filmed in many locations. Nevada, Calif, and Utah were mentioned in the credits. Could someone please tell me where the last scene of the film was shot. I am talking about the bridge seen with Walsh, Russell, and Quinlan. Some people told me it was filmed near Auburn, CA near Sacramento. I don't think it was. Could someone please let me know?

It is where Highway 49 crosses the American River east of Auburn (Auburn is on I-80 north east of Sacramento). I will visit this spot in July as part of a three week tour of road movies locations.

Will you take any pictures of the locations?

reply

Absolutely! I'm in Eureka, Utah at the moment and am working my way round the south west. I will leave a message on this board when my photos are online.

the final scene where Jeff (Russell) and Red (Walsh) are on the bridge, that is indeed the ForrestHill Bridge, which is in a small town of ForrestHill next to Auburn, the reason I know this is because I live in Auburn!

The Movie, Phenomenon starring John Travolta was also filmed in Auburn

reply

The rivers near Auburn were used for the scenes where Jeff drives along the river and gets cut off on his mobile call. Then the closed road. Then where he goes into the river in his car. But the final scenes, after the chase, are done south of Gorman and not on the bridge you think. I thought it looked similar when I was there too, but it wasn't until I got to the Gorman area that I had indisputable proof of the final scenes.

Go see my pictures. Look under "Breakdown". Look at my notes to each picture.

Looks like the bridge was actually in Gorman per your photos but I can't seem to find it on Google Earth. Can you help me out?

Go north on I-5 from L.A. Take exit 183 and drive north up Golden State Highway which runs parallel to the left of I-5. You come to a car park and a barrier across the road. Continue north on foot. After a mile or two, just before you get to Pyramid lake, the road crosses the river at Piru Gorge: This is the bridge. I have put a map up on Webshots in the Breakdown section for you here:

That sure is the bridge for the end scenes in Breakdown. I also think Death Race 2000 was filmed around there somewhere because in that film they drive over a dam which has pyramid blocks lining the road.

Very nice album, thanks for sharing.

Judging from the condition of the building used for Belle's Diner in your photos, I'm assuming that what we saw in the film was entirely production design. It's amazing how run down it looks now.

Thanks for your comment. It takes years of research to find these places and the diner was one of my favourite successes. It's a great stand-alone picture too. I shall return in 2013 to try and get the shot from the hill over the town of 'Brackett' (which was not done at Victorville as there is some matte painting and CGI stuff to create the town all alone in the desert.

I was wondering if a town like that really exists. Now I know!

How did you find the diner?

By following up every lead from this board - one was eventually the right one! Sometimes you have to drive round and round to find something. The church (or place where it stood - I heard it was burnt down) from Kill Bill is around there somewhere too - I shall check it out in 2013. It's a big desert.

It's not listed as a location on this site. But I think the opening gas station scene was filmed in far-western Colorado near the Utah border. The reason I say that is because there's a Denver Post newspaper box out front. Also, there's that scene right after that which looks like it was filmed on top of the plateau where they also filmed "American Flyers" (Colorado National Monument).

Great photos MrLocation. But I can't tell from them and the map where exactly the diner is. Can you help? Thanks.

reply

Clarification: i meant where it is location-wise. I can of course see the diner itself in the photos.

Cut and paste either of these to Google Maps:
1) 40020 240th St E, Palmdale, CA 93591
2) 34.609723,-117.702574
It's still there and looks just the same!

and I spent two days there. The hotel where I stayed turned out to be like a transition home for guys getting out of Folsom State Prison. I checked into a hotel that the people at the mechanic shop showed me, it was very quiet. After taking a shower I open my door and there are like 80 very tough looking guys milling around the parking lot. It was like a tattoo convention.

Auburn was fun though, I met some interesting people and actually found a coin purse on the road with 50 dollars in it. I remember seeing the place where Travolta was struck by lightning. It was near the Calcutta Bar if that is the right name of the place.

always wondered about Brackett too, anybody knows where it is ? I know the bank used is in Victorville, CA

Yes, Brackett definately. Does anyone know the location where they are standing at the top of a hill overlooking the town? The part where Red tells Jeff he's going to go into the bank and get the money? That view was great.
