It reminded me of The Vanishing too (with Sandra Bullock and Kiefer Sutherland).

Yep. The Vanishing, an American retread of a 1988 foreign film, was pretty similar. I have a really hard time with Jeff Bridges' character and his ridiculous, slurred speech though. Had he opted for more subtlety, and less cartoonish caricature, I'd have been able to enjoy the film more. The original film is supposedly much better and much, much darker.
