Some good scenes, overall- not recommended (spoilers)

I just finished watching this movie...finally. It was like a book that I had trouble getting through. I would watch it for about half an hour, get bored and turn it off. Days later I would do the same and tonight I finally got to the end. It is so slow and very cinematic. It has very little dialogue (that's not a complaint, just a fact). I found myself hitting the 2x fast-forward on the DVD and that worked wonders.

I bought it off Ebay for a very reasonable price and will add it faithfully to my Johnny Depp and Marlon Brando collection.

It had some really great scenes...Raphael's sister in law, father, et al at the table when the cousin comes in and the father slashes his tires.

The scenes with his son and his wife. But there was so much brooding and grim music (yes, I know it was Iggy) and hair blowing in the wind and bluffs and cacti and desert. At times I felt like I was watching the history channel. I do not recommend this film unless you have trouble falling asleep. It is more effective that Ambien and non-habit forming.

On the contrary, i would highly recommend this film. Especially for those who wants to watch a real movie, not an action-show.

And i also think that it could be a little better. I don't think the score is "grim". It's fitting to the scenes, it's ok.

Glad you liked it. I do agree that Luis Guzman's acting in that last scene is a bit sketchy. That could also be attributed to bad directing, though - it's something Johnny really should have noticed and done somethingn about. That's my biggest issue for the movie, really.

I wouldn't say it's an entertaining film, but you nailed it when you called it "haunting."

As for your question on a different thread (I'm not good at multithreading), I don't think it was ever a two disk. My copy did come from the Korean region-free release and came with The Man Who Cried, but there weren't two spaces for DVDs in the same case. Sorry I couldn't help you further on that one, though.

Yes, it was raw and naive in parts, but it is definitely a film worth watching. Johnny as a director may have taken on too much, but the Johnny the actor was supreme, as usual.
