Yes. He has Native American blood, so it's not a stretch.
I'm surprised you said you know someone who saw it on TV. You're lucky! It was never released in the US so we're stuck getting bootlegs from Korea or buying Region 2 DVD players.

Some people raved about it, calling it a haunting, beautiful masterpiece. Some people completely tore it to shreds, calling it unnecessarily dark, poorly acted and directed, etc., much like the back and forth criticisms you see here. Depp was so distraught by the criticisms that he decided to spare the heartache and not release it in the US. It had already been ready for distribution on R2, so it was too late. But since the critics were so hard on it, he lost confidence in its accessibility to the American audience, and here we are, stuck trying to get bootleg versions rather than a good decent copy.

I really had no idea that he'd been a director before. Thanks for letting me know(: If I didn't read your post I probably would have never noticed that he directed the movie until after I saw it.
He was sort of strong-armed into acting in the film, actually. The producers offered him something like 3m for the picture if he only directed it, and 8m if he starred in it as well. Truth be told, he probably won't direct again, after the hit this took at the festivals.
