after watching this movie in my russian class, i got to thinking, the general plot points of both this movie and GTA4 are really similar.
-main character is of russian/east european descent
-main character is an ex-military person
-MC moves to a new city to live with brother to make a better life
-Brother screws up these plans by forcing the MC to become a killer/criminal again
-MC has to kill a lot of people to keep himself and brother safe.

well the storyline and atmosphere are quite cool, especially for a game, there are both violence and tenderness, so maybe guys in rockstar games liked it too and decided to make a similar game

i came to this page half-expecting the GTA4 issue to be brought up because i've been thinking exactly the same thing. if you've seen the 2nd film as well, danila goes to america with his brother (they go to chicago but start out in new york - specifically brighton beach). and kills people.
the thing is, i get the feeling that danila and niko are very similar character-wise because the audience gets the feeling that they're ultimately good and likeable people, except that they lack a sense of morality and, well, kill a lot of people. i'm convinced this film was the secret inspiration behind GTA4.
They may have used this film in their research, but GTA4 is based on the same model as the previous GTA games.
