Daniel Day-Lewis could have gone pro.

Barry McGuigan said so.

When he starred in Jim Sheridan's The Boxer set in Northern Ireland at the height of the Troubles, he prepared for the role by training under former World Champion Barry McGuigan.

The Clones Cylone described his pupil as "a natural" in the ring and the movie was lauded for its highly realistic fight scenes. "He could have made it as a pro," McGuigan said.

'This is an outrage! Saboo, You slag!'

I tend to agree, I'm sure he could have had some amateur fights and won. To be a good amateur you have to either have 1.) a dedicated work ethic or 2.) a lot of natural ability, to be a good pro you need both.

You truly have to become a "professional" boxer, ie you train for 40 hours a week - it is your job. A top notch actor doesn't have time for that.

I would think they meant if they had trained since they were kids. They have the raw talent. Day-Lewis is also a method actor, so it might have been that he had the drive as well. Is DeNiro a method actor as well? That sounds familiar now that I'm thinking about it.

Couldn't agree more! When I finish sawing the movie, I came to the internet to find if he has trained boxing in the past. Guess not... Great movie by the way!

I heard that too - he would have been a 40 year old with no fights, though.

i think mcguigan was just telling about how good daniel had gotten and how serious and passionate he was about the role.

haha... You know, I've thought about that a couple of times. He'd have to refuse the role.
