Was Daniel Day Lewis lazy?

He was in okay shape for this movie but why didn't he get ripped like Jake Gyllenhaal did for Southpaw?

Did he just not care that much?

It's only been the last ten years or so that that type of physique has become a staple... DDL is a method actor and he trained for almost 3 years to be believable in that role and, for the time period the movie takes place in, his physique was accurate...

If you follow actual boxing you'd recognize that Daniel Day Lewis moved legit as heck in this movie. You can see the actual technique and style in his movements. He trained for years in boxing to make it look authentic and he achieved it. If you follow boxing many many many boxers have his build in this movie. Lean and ready to fight for 12 rounds. Jake is TOO built. Having that big of muscles is actually a negative for a boxer because you'll gas early and get taken out late. Daniel Day Lewis looked a ton like the physique of Oscar DeLa Hoya in this. Plus, you'd have to have flawless nutrition to look like Jake and still be able to fight 12 rounds and Daniel's character in this is clearly a poor man who couldn't afford to eat a pro boxer's diet. Yet another reason why Southpaw didn't have much attention to detail lol! Jake probably shot up on steroids before taking the role; like for real. Lewis would also knock Jake out in real life with 3 years of ACTUAL boxing training on top of that.

As a huge boxing fan I was thoroughly impressed by Daniel's commitment to the physicality it takes to box. Even the opening shots of him warming up in prison were more legit than the fights in Southpaw lol! It might LOOK like Jake trained harder but I assure... he didn't.

yea jake was in better shape but DDL had the technique down better. the first thing i said to my self watching southpaw was how could jake be champion if he doesn't have any defense. it was annoying actually.
