Reed was a magician

He didn't pursue the magic act due to his dependence on meth n coke at the time. Looked like he got clean later on. Dirk was his partner in the Brock landers series' and his best friend. He was sticking by dirk thru thick and thin, part of what made him a great guy, and part of the family that jack had essentially adopted.

Keep in mind though too, he didn't realize that their music was crap -- just watch the deleted scenes of the two in the recording studio. I imagine at the time, he probably though music was probably his better option.

It's not unreasonable to assume his "talent" as a magician wasn't much greater than Dirk's "talent" as a singer. He does seem to have landed some magic show gig late in the movie, but that might as well be only due to his porn fame, not because he was much good at that stuff.
