So this isn't in the Top 250 but these films are...

The Dark Knight
Return of the Jedi
Toy Story
Jurassic Park
Barry Lyndon

Hmmm... something tells me the Top 250 is really just a crock of sh!t!

reply

Ha, nothing wrong with those movies (I mean, personally I never liked Jurassic Park so I'll give you that ... and I never seen Barry Lyndon, but it is Kubrick so it gotta be worth at least half of something right off the bat), if nothing else they are all staples of their genres ... I do agree with you though, Boogie Nights should be up there, and if I looked over the list I'm sure I could find at least 100 movies on there far less worthy.
If it's any consolation it's on the "They-Call-Me-Steve top 250" list, probably even top 20.

reply

I think these movies really shouldn't be in the Top 250:

Lord of the Rings
The Intouchables
Gladiator
Guardians of the Galaxy
Wall-E
Aliens
Snatch
L.A. Confidential
Django Unchained
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
X-Men: Days of Future Past
The Avengers
A Beautiful Mind
The King's Speech
Monsters Inc.

reply

agreed with everything but la confidential

reply

Agreed. I actually think LA Confidential should be higher than it is.

reply

[deleted]

I recently watched LA confidential again..and at the time it was an amazing movie..ground breaking action scenes..good plot. After seeing it NOW though, i didnt think it stood the test of time. Thats kind of a true marker of a classic. Boogie Nights Fits the bill. Its Timeless..even now its good.

I completely agree.

reply

I disagree on LOTR. But other than that I don't disagree with you, and even though I love Django Unchained, Guardians of the Galaxy and Aliens, they shouldn't be there.

reply

Wall-E, A Beautiful Mind, The King's Speech are awesome!

Wall-E for me is the best animated movie ever!

reply

Gladiator was fking baddass. to say that doesn't belong in the top100 even means your taste is in your assss.

reply

I agree with some of these. Disagrees with others. Like Aliens for example, are you serious? That is like the magnum opus of Sci-Fi Action Thrillers. Far better than Alien which feels a bit outdated, but is still good.

reply

Barry Lyndon is one hell of a movie, way better than Boogie Nights which is also a great movie but nowhere near BL's league

reply

Boogie Nights is great and should be in the top 250.
However, all of the other ones listed are great too with the exception of Barry Lyndon which is okay but certainly not Kubrick's best.

reply

Return of the Jedi is a great movie? Really? Star Wars with muppets? The only saving grace in that film is the Emperor. Without him, that movie is nothing.

Also, saying Barry Lyndon is a better movie than Boogie Nights is really a matter of opinion. It's like comparing apples and oranges. I for one would rather watch Boogie Nights any day as I barely was able to make it through one sitting of the excruciatingly slow Barry Lyndon.

reply

Well, yes. As is everything else we're discussing on here (including your comments about Return of the Jedi). That goes without saying!

reply

Mercader79 - Then why are we discussing anything at all if it just comes down to a matter of opinion?

reply

because people like to discuss to their opinions

reply

Hannibal Lector saved Silence of the Lambs for me.

reply

Absolutely. Also it's one of the few films that give the top 250 some credibility.

reply

Boogie Nights belongs in the top 10, granted, but your list of supposed atrocities could be improved. Listing Barry Lyndon in particular equates to a red herring. Toy Story and Jurassic Park are also very worthy.

reply

Barry Lyndon isn't for everyone. It is very slow, do you agree?

Also, I would consider Toy Story and Jurassic Park in the Top 250 if I was, lets see... 7 years old perhaps?

reply

I don't agree. Barry Lyndon is riveting. Toy Story and Jurassic Park are exceptionally well made films. I don't know if they would make my personal list, but I can definitely understand their place on that list in general.

reply

I don't find Barry Lyndon slow in the slightest

reply

Barry Lyndon

Ehr...... What the hell? Paul Thomas Anderson himself would probably be quite impressed with that statement. The critical reception of Barry Lyndon goes way beyond anything PTA has ever done. Now that doesn't dictate that it's better but I'm just saying (perhaps it's not the best movie too choose for such a thread).

And whats wrong with Return of the Jedi (I mean you listed that and not the 2 others)?

Toy Story is a damn good animation movie and I think the first big feature 3d animation film.

Jurasic Park is really good aswell. The dinos were the entire premise but it worked, can't blame the movie for that.

The Dark Knight is problematic yeah.

But I don't get why you pick theese films. I mean films like Platoon, The Green Mile, The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers are up there.

You see things; and you say Why? But I dream things that never were and I say Why not?

reply

Jurassic Park is pure Hollywood with totally inaccurate dinosaurs - raptors were only the size of a medium sized dog in real life. T Rex' were way smaller too. After reading all the inaccuracies about it, the film really lost a lot of respect from me. Oh yeah, there were also no venomous or poison spitting dinosaurs. But either way, I chose to use these films as examples because for me, they're not nearly in the same league as Boogie Nights.

reply

Who cares about inaccuracies? Fact is, Jurassic Park was a landmark film for special effects and Toy Story was a landmark film for animation. Both are perfectly enjoyable for adults as well as kids. Outside of their technical achievements they remain incredibly well-crafted films.

EDIT - it should probably be noted that dilophosaurus spitting is present in the novel.

Barry Lyndon is a classic. It's paced slowly, but that doesn't mean it isn't any good.

Boogie Nights is exceptional though. I love when Anderson keeps the camera on for those tracking shots, complete with the camera pans. The track through the club at the beginning and the track on Macy before he kills his wife and commits suicide are great. I really like the scene in Magnolia where Donnie walks into the bar.

Great use of music too.

But why take any notice of the top 250? You could make another list of over 1000 films that someone could make an argument for being there.

reply

One of the most affecting movies about human beings I've ever seen, you go through every emotion watching this movie, it's a masterpiece!

I only work in black ...and sometimes very, very dark grey!

reply

These days the largest demograph voting for the Top 250 are obviously somewhere around 16-22yr old males. After they go to the theater they immediately get online and give a bunch those films a "10". It's obvious when you look at the amount of votes new flicks are getting.

Boogie Nights should definitely in the Top 250. These films should definitely not be on the list, even if it's not Boogie Nights which replaces them :

The Truman Show
Shutter Island
Twelve Monkeys
X-Men: Days of Future Past
Rush
How to Train Your Dragon
V for Vendetta

I can think of at least 20 other flicks which should replace those.

reply

Boogie Nights is such a great anthem of the dysfunctional porn "family" of the 1970s, that holds up to this day....if it's not in the top 100 let alone 250, then the list has no credibility in my eyes. Just think of how many careers this single movie launched...it ain't by accident.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

...and revised (Burt Reynolds)

reply

Indeed very true...and to think he fought tooth and nail against taking the role, thought the low budget payment he received was an insult, and fought with PTA on set, physically even.

If he hadn't disowned the movie right before release and fired his agent as a result, he likely would have had a great chance of beating Robin Williams for Best Supporting Actor.

reply

Reynolds is an egotistical *beep* I'm sure he entered the whole thing with the attitude that he wasn't gonna let some young little-known director run the show. I hate to think what he was like on the set.

reply

yea he was a monster on set I heard, but he also was up for an Oscar wasn't he? he was great. the movie is unlike any other and captures the family centered around father jack perfectly, esp in los angeles during those years. one of my favorite movies ever, and the porn part of it has little to do with the great elements of the movie , they could have been all working at the donut shop. but the porn made it cool anyway lol

reply

The Truman Show is an incredibly well-made film. There's a lot more films I have an issue with being in the top 250 than that.

But yes, the list is slanted so that popular new releases shoot up the charts. I like the They Shoot Pictures lists which has a separate list for 21st Century Films, although some of them do pop up in their list of top 1000 too.

reply

I agree with this list it's very fair.
Although I liked all those especially vendetta and train your dragon. Other films should replace them.

V for Vendetta was awesome! It should be in top 100!

reply

The Trumanshow , 12 monkeys and V for vendetta are really good.but I agree with your rest of the list though.

All it takes is one bad day to reduce sanest man alive to lunacy

reply

Never seen Shutter Island or Twelve Monkeys. I agree with you on V for Vendetta, X-Men isn't there anymore, Rush has great racing scenes, and Niki Lauda has no complaints about any portrayal of characters. It's crazy how much Hemsworth and Hunt look alike aswell as Lauda and Bruhl. I think it deserves to be there. How to Train Your Dragon is fantastically paced and has great animation and great action scenes plus actual character development. It totally deserves to be there. The Truman Show is even more amazing. Especially the last 30 or so minutes. Must be some of the best in movie history.

reply

Thank you. I thought I was alone in thinking TDK was awful.
