Great Film

The boards are quiet , this is a great film that hasn't reached the audience it deserves

Well, I wouldn't go so far as to say it was great, but I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was (I got it at one of those "2 for $1" VHS blowouts at Movie Gallery). And naw, man, it certainly hasn't reached the audience it deserves. (I thought "The Last Seduction" met a similar fate...that's a pretty good one, too, btw.)

What, specifically, did you like best about it?

Oh, yeah, maybe you can help me out with something. I only watched it twice before I lent it to one of my friends, and I can't remember for the life of me how Edsel got killed in the fight at the hotel. Do you remember who killed him and how they did it?

hey

I think it was one of the hitmen during the fight between mark dacascos and the hitmen , i think i havent seen it in a while because i cant find the tape hehe , should rent it out again or something. Anyway i think thats what happend.

What i liked best about it , the grungy atmosphere to it , and the film headed in a different direction that i thought it would. When he comes out of prision u expect a huge action film and him getting back at people etc etc. But its more character based and drug issues.

The acting was great i thought , And all round surreal story that goes into various places that you don't expect.

I really like the idea of him becoming a drummer for a band , thats an interesting mix into the story , becoming clean and improving his life.

The soundtrack was quite good too

Yeah, I pretty much agree with everything you said. I think the thing I liked best was that the film did indeed head in a completely different direction than I was expecting. In the beginning, I thought it was going to be a sort of exploration of Larry and Jesse's relationship, or, like you suggested, a revenge saga. Instead, I was left with the impression that Jesse just really, really wishes that Life would quit throwing him curveballs. (The guy who runs The Calvacade of Schlock seems to hold the same opinion; here's the link if ya wanna check out his review: http://www.geocities.com/tyrannorabbit/boogieboy.html)

I tell my friends that the worst thing about the movie is the title (why "Boogie Boy," for God's sake?! His nickname was "Lucky Boy!" Not that THAT title would be too much better...), and a few of the scenes at the motel drag.

Can you recommend any other Mark Dacascos films, or is this the only one you've seen? I know he's been in other movies, but I would like to have a recommendation to go on so I'm not stuck with something crappy. ( :

Another film with Dacascos that I strongly recommend if you can find it is "Sanctuary". It also stars the Woolvett character as well. In fact, the credits on Sanctuary is actually how I found out about Boogie Boy. The film is very dark and underground, two notable qualities I enjoy in a film. I won't spoil the film, but Dacascos is a government operative/assassin who goes into hiding. I highly recommend it if you can locate the film. Enjoy

Thank you! I will begin questing for it.

yeah sanctuary was great, again , it was a different angle of the usual government operative film , it goes into a deeper look at the central character and also the story created a unique atmosphere to the film.

Another film I liked , called "Only The Strong" , its about the study of the brazillian martial art "Capoeira" , I studied it when I was younger so thats probley half the reason I enjoyed it , it plays off a similiar formula used in the film "Dangerous Minds" about discipline in rough gang schools but it was still quite good to watch.

Yeah the title was a bit off putting , it should have been called "Lucky Boy" , as you said it isnt much better but does suite the film.

They should have named it after one of the songs in the movie , the one Joan Jett sings and discusses in the film like "Full Cycle" , which would symbolise that Jesse has gone back to where he started out.

Or "The Sickness" might have been good , in which Joan Jett describes that everyone has a sickness they can't cure.

I'm a fan of Marc Dacascos's work.

I liked bugle-oops, Boogie boy a lot(except for the gay overtones). I think it was a realistic and smart movie.

Other suggestions:

Drive: This movie is more an action flick than a story, but, whatever. He really moves fast in this one. Lots of good choreography. It co-stars um, Dwayne Wayne from Diffr'nt World, and Brittany Murphy. That's my fave Dacascos film.

Sanctuary: It was a cool movie, and also has James Woolvet from Boogie Boy.

China Strike-Force: I got it just because Marc was in it. We also get to see Cornholio act like a gangster. StupidStupidStupid. Poor Marc has this terrible bowl-haircut. It really stands out. And his fight in that one isn't all that he is capable of showing.

Cradle TO the Freakin' Grave: Also got this b/c he fights Jet Li. Why does every martial arts movie nowadays have to star a rapper? I didn't get geeked up about that fight scene either.

But check out Drive if you want to see some top-notch fight scenes.

reply

Thanks, man, I appreciate it. I'll keep my eyes peeled for "Drive," b/c I have to have my fight scenes! ( ;

Actually, I got "Sanctuary" on this board's recommendations, but sorry, guys, I just thought it was OK. It didn't have as many fight scenes as I expected it to, and Jaimz Woolvet wasn't onscreen enough, in my opinion. Mark was good, though, so I kept watching. (I really think he could be an awesome leading man for major action films, if given a good script and half a chance!) I did like the ending, though; I think if they made a sequel, it would probably be better than the original, b/c Mark Dacascos as a warrior-priest for the Vatican would quite simply ROCK!!!

"Crying Freeman" was also a good movie. And i too like "Only the Strong", a nice movie with an 80's vibe to it. DNA was also an enjoyable Predator/Alien clone. All underrated movies, but i have that weird feeling somehow these mediocre movies are better than big budget blockbusters? I can not quite put my finger on it, but i know that the feeling is there.

See "Brotherhood of the Wolf," if you're interested in seeing more good acting work from Dacascos. That, and "Boogie Boy," have his strongest work as an actor. He's capable of doing better than most of what he gets stuck with. He ain't Robert Duvall, but he could possibly do as well as Tom Cruise, in his best work, if given the chance.

I'll be honest, I only bought this because Joan Jett is in it. She doesn't get an amazing role to play (essentially a sleazy version of her own self), but that's what drew me to it.

What sold me was that Dacascos stars. I'd seen Drive and quite liked some of his other work, so I felt I was in for a good journey. I wasn't disappointed.

except for the gay overtones. I think it was a realistic and smart movie

Undertones, actually... and they are also very realistic. It's only hinted at (although the hints are pretty blatant as far as hints go) and it's quite realistc for a random bloke to be gay. That's why I loved having that theme in there - His sexuality is not the point of the plot, or anything. He just happens to be gay.... maybe... or not... it's nicely open to your own interpretation. It could just have been a 'thing' the two had while in prison - Several ex-con friends of mine experienced the same thing. I personally think he is.

I'm not gay myself, but I'm all for equal rights and knowing quite a few 'normal' gays (ie those who *aren't* all camp and OTT about it) this film just seems so more true to life and is one of the many aspects that make this such a cool film. I like real people, rather than the Hollywood templates (like a maverick cop tortured by the death of his wife, or somesuch).

Another equally cool facet is the fact that he's a kick-ass drummer. OK, we don't get to see much of Dacascos's actual skills, but to have the drummer be the main character is just cool (and yes, I *am* a drummer myself) - It's usually a guitarist or a classical musician who gets the limelight.

What gets me most is how much you get drawn in to the atmosphere of this film. Most things about it are subtle things, but they all go together to create a really engaging flick.

Hello, ttaskmaster:

Interesting post. I just saw a trailer for this film and was surprised to see Joan Jett in it. Can you tell me how large her role is?

Beyond the Joan Jett aspect, this film looks like a lot of gritty fun. Is it worth seeking out? It's very surprising to see Emily Lloyd here as well.

Heya Warped!!

Joan is the 6th billed and has a supporting role.
Basically, Dacascos's character is fresh out of prison and has the choice between resuming his life with his recidivist friends, or to escape that life and start afresh. Joan's character is the one offering him that escape.

Joan herself has several scenes, including performing the song 'Full Cycle' live... twice in a row, in fact, but there's a reason for that.
She's sort-of a sleazy, attittudey version of her own self in this, but still entertaining. If you're a proper Jett-Head, you need to see this film.
If not, see it anyway - It's pretty cool!!

You'll also see Joan's fellow Blackhearts members Tommy Price, Sean Koos and Tony Bruno... and if you watch closely, you'll see Benjamin Browder of Farscape and Stargate fame.

Other good Joan Jett appearances that may interest you include the Highlander episode 'Free Fall' where she is the guest star, and Light Of Day where she is the main character alongside Michael J Fox!

Thanks for the details, ttaskmaster!

I shall indeed seek this film out. I saw the trailer on a cheapo VHS for another film from this studio ("Postmortem" with Charlie Sheen, which wasn't bad). I much prefer these forgotten B-grade crime thrillers over almost anything I've seen from recent years.

I have seen Joan Jett in "Light of Day" several times and own a copy of the film, and I have the soundtrack. She's surprisingly good there, though Michael J. Fox seems somewhat miscast as her brother. (<--- Note that I didn't say it's Joan who is miscast.) I shall seek out that episode of "Highlander."

Joan is a decent actress, but more important, she remains relevant as a rocker and puts on a killer show. Do you have her new album with the Blackhearts, "Unvarnished," yet? I need to get that soon.

Thanks again for the filling me in on a Joan performance that somehow slipped through the cracks with me.
