Martha terminating her pregnancy

In the bathtub scene Martha tells Helen she had to terminate her 1st pregnancy due to "abnormalities" Helen asks Martha "What abnormalities" and Helen doesn't answer. Is it safe to presume to had an abortion because it was a girl and she so desperately wanted a boy?? She did tell Helen "She would've been just about your age" So... I'm thinking Martha is that crazy that they insinuate she terminated her girl to get a boy!

I agree with you. I always thought Martha aborted that pregnancy because it was a girl. I wish the movie had explained why Martha was boy-obsessed and why she didn't have more children (sons) or remarry.

That still doesn't explain why Martha didn't give birth to her daughter, then simply get pregnant again.. and again if necessary.

No it doesn't explain all of it but I think that's what they were aiming for. There were so many holes in that silly little flick that it's really hard to know fully.

I definitely agree that there were major plot holes in this movie. I'm kinda indifferent to this film, but I watched it again recently just to see if I could finally understand everything that was going on. I couldn't. I give up. It really had the potential to be great though.

Lol funny I got desperate & watched it again today on demand. The first time i saw it was when it came out. I'm pretty indifferent to the film myself but figured I would re-watch again since I didn't remember most of it. Today was the first time I noticed Gwyneth's wig, how scary anorexic she looked at the park, and how incongruent her park scene appearance was in general.

reply

Thanks! Gwyneth's wig was horrible and she was scary-skinny. I think she's over-rated. She co-starred in a better thriller/suspense film after this one starring Michael Douglas called A Perfect Murder. She's sort of hit-and-miss for me.

Yeah I've seen that. It was pretty good if I recall correctly. That's something I wouldn't mind seeing again. Yeah the park scene is where I first noticed her wig & where I REALLY noticed the anorexic look. It was so odd because she looked 10-20lbs thinner than she appeared in any other scene. I wonder what was going on with her weight in that particular scene? Do you watch Hemlock Grove from Netflix? I only ask because I just started it tonight and finishing up episode 2. It isn't great by any means, but watchable if you're into these fantasy/werewolf/vampire/paranormal creatures type shows. I wouldn't even go as far as recommending it, but there's nothing else on and I'm hoping it gets better.

reply

A Perfect Murder is really good. I don't watch Hemlock Grove. I did just start watching Sleepy Hollow and The Originals. Both are fantasy shows and The Originals feature vampires and werewolves. They are pretty good shows. If you like fantasy shows you might like them. I also watch Scandal, Orphan Black, Hannibal, The Newsroom, True Blood, and Game Of Thrones.

Yeah I saw those on your profile. I watch Game of Thrones, Hannibal, and True Blood from those you listed. I saw your YouTube clips and see you like Eric *wink* I do too and Alex Skarsgard in general lol! My tablet is acting up just in case I stop replying I didn't want you to think I just started to ignore you. You should PM me sometime. It seems like we have a lot of common interests.

reply

Ty for your response but before I accidentally read ahead, does your mail contain a spoiler that is contained in book 3? I'm about to start it & if the abuser is revealed there (in entwined), I will just wait to find out who the abuser is while reading. Does your mail contain any Entwined spoilers? I wanna read your mail, but I don't know what spoilers if any, may be there. Thanks again! LOL this is funny.

reply

Hey, I was just looking at your profile and saw listed under books, "Bared To You." It won't allow me to click to view more where it lists the author, but is that by Sylvia Day by chance? If so, I coincidentally just downloaded a sample of that book but haven't read it yet! LOL WHAT A WILD COINCIDENCE!

reply

LOL! Yeah. Bared To You is by Sylvia Day. It's really an amazing book. I'm totally into that series. I finished book three-- Entwined With You-- just recently. I actually wrote book reviews for all of her book here http://ohfifty.com/reviews and I was fortunate enough to interview her and the vid is here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8ueotArbO0.

Oh wow that is SOOOOOO NEAT! Now I will be sure to read that series before starting any other books! Thanks so much for sharing your links for your reviews and your interview! I will DEFINITELY check those out ASAP, most likely tomorrow! My tablet wants updates and it's running slow, so since I'm tired anyway, I'll just get ready for bed & do everything tomorrow since it's so late. This is really cool that I stumbled into you! I hope we can chat more and I will look for you tomorrow to let you know I've read your reviews, read at least the sample I downloaded from the book, and watched your interview. Thanks again and I hope you have a wonderful evening! It was great talking with you tonight!

reply

There will be a Crossfire cable tv series next year! So excited to see who will be cast as Gideon and Eva! It was nice meeting you. Have a nice night! It was great talking to you, too. Talk to you tomorrow. Goodnight!

the first question is did she really had an abortion? she's catholic, it's unlikely, but she's lower class. maybe she just wanted to psychologically affect helen in a negative way.

i mostly will not be able to answer your reply, since marissa mayer hacked my email, no notification

I assumed that she lied because she wanted to know the sex of Helen's child. Helen didn't want an amnio, Martha wanted to know asap if she was getting a grandson, so she cooked up a bs story about a terminated pregnancy due to abnormalities to scare Helen into getting it. Her lie got Helen to do it, Martha knows a boy is on the way, all is well at Kilronin.

reply

Jack2979, that's what I thought too - that she made the whole terminated pregnancy up, just so she could find out the sex of Helen's child via the amniocentesis. Maybe back in 1998, that was the only way to know the sex of the child? Today, it's completely unnecessary, but perhaps back then, that's what you had to do. Based on her lies and manipulations, I didn't believe a word coming out of Martha's mouth.
