Jackie Chan??

I recall in 1996 long before this came out Jackie Chan was supposed to be the co-star in this anyone have any info?

Yep. Rumors ran rampant and studio fanned the flames. Early publicity for Beverly Hills Ninja trumpeted the starring duo of Chris Farley and Jackie Chan. Print ads and promotional slides from the studio, advertising the film, projected in US theaters nationwide to hype the project, featured Jackie named and pictured side-by-side with Farley. Somewhere along the way, however, Chan bowed out. The exact reason for his defection was never clear. Maybe he didn't like the idea of being "second banana" to Farley? Or just didn't like the idea of "second banana" period. Either way, I think Robin Shou was a better choice for Gobei anyway. Farley's Haru needed to be balanced with a "straight man." I don't think Jackie could have pulled it off.

Geez...

Lemme guess, yer one of those die hard, Jackie Chan fans who attacks/flames anyone who, A) says ANYTHING YOU deem negative about Mr. Chan AND/OR, B) disagrees with YOUR opinion of Mr. Chan?

And you've checked out my posting history too? You're also a stalker. Nice.

Get your panties out of a wad, jc2ar. When I said 'straight' I was NOT referring to sexual preferences. It's a TERM used in comedy. Here, let me find you a definition...

------

A double act, also known as a comedy duo, is a comic device in which humor is derived from the uneven relation between two partners, usually of the same gender, age, ethnic origin, and profession, but drastically different personalities. Often one of them, the STRAIGHT MAN is portrayed as reasonable and serious, and the other one is portrayed as funny or simply unorthodox.

------

See where the definition says, "uneven relation?" Mr. Chan's style is overflowing with humor. I'd go so far as to call him 'gifted.' Have you even seen this film? His and Farley's styles would have clashed terribly. If being comedic is sweet and straight salt, "Beverly Hills Ninja" would have been way too sweet. Also, Mr. Chan is a headliner, not a second banana--although it worked in, "Around the World in 80 Days" because Mr. Coogan (his co-stars) played a great straight man.

My OPINION that Mr. Chan couldn't have pulled off the straight man--now that we are all clear on the definition--opposite Farley is based on the facts I know about the two actors.

What was your tirade, and personal attack of both me and Robin Shou, based on? A blind obsession with Mr. Chan I'd wager. Tell me--better yet, tell us ALL--how do YOU THINK Mr. Chan would feel about the way YOU treat other people in HIS name? He'd be mortified! I don't know Mr. Chan personally, but, from what I DO know, he's a very nice, peace-loving man.

You are an abysmal representative of him...

My poor thread....
Actually I remember seeing a promo in 1996 for this movie all it did was show the names in white against a black background of Chris Farley, Jackie Chan, then Beverly Hills Ninja. I was really bummed Jackie wasn't in it. Funny how Jackie has changed in the last 10 years. He does almost no comedy at all any more (much to his detriment) and I think he could have been pretty low key in this actually.

He played the straight man rather well in Rush Hour, so he would have done a good job in this.
